Running a pc without bios?

Post by stuntpenguin007 » Sat Oct 03, 2009 10:03 pm

I've got an old computer lying around, but the bios chip / socket seems to have been ripped out pulling a few traces. So basically there's no chance of soldering the bios flash chip back in.

Any hope for this computer or not? I'm pretty sure I can get this same motherboard for $15 on ebay so its not a huge deal, but it would be cool in some sort of cabinet project, so I thought I'd check.

The BIOS is what is required for the computer to run/boot to any OS, so you tell me if you need a BIOS to run a computer.

Yeah I know, I was just thinking there might be some sort of debugging device or whatever you could plug into an lpc port to act as bios.

I know what bios do and that they are a necessity, but just wondering....

Thanks  Guess it's just some more junk for the junk bin.

Sorry. That was what I did when I saw this thread.

The BIOS makes the computer boot/run.

No BIOS = No Computer.

I know this is already solved, but BIOS stands for Basic In and Out System.

It runs a system checkup before starting the OS. It is the thing that checks if anything on your computer is wrong, and it also is the only thing that can give the command to start the kernel.
