Most viruses nowadays don't touch the boot sector, so unless you are grabbing softwares off floppies, the harddisk suffered an error that damaged the harddisk's boot sector and the error is your BIOS trying to stop the OS/testdisk from repairing the error. Look for an option in the BIOS for 'virus protection' or 'boot sector locking' and turn it off.

 = pathetic taken to a high extreme.

Do you have the boot order in the BIOS correct? You need to make sure the CD drive is at the top of the list (or at least above the hard drive).

Completely unplug your hard drive and try booting off a live CD.

Maybe your RAM went bad?

Sounds like when a computer is having RAM read/write issues. Either your RAM somehow got corrupted in the process or you need to mess with your settings.
