This reminds me of the AVR vs. PIC wars.
It kinda does depend on the situation, but for general languages to learn just because, like others have said, C is great, then C++. BASIC was my first language, it's pretty fun to code with and is easy to learn. (Plus, the Tandy 102 has BASIC on it. )

I prefer C to C++ for no reason at all almost.

To put this to rest when I was at my interview with Intel they wanted to make sure I knew C. Understanding ASM was after that then Perl Scripting.
