2.5" Pustom screen hacking information

Post by Life of Brian » Fri May 29, 2009 9:42 pm

My 2.5" Pustom screen from DealExtreme finally came in the mail. I took some pictures and checked some stuff out for everyone.

The screen comes with 2 AV cables - one is for power, audio, and video input and ends in a single small tip, while the other cable is of the standard RCA plug variety.

It has a nice little stand, but removes easily as it's only attached by two screws.

The case is held together by four screws, so it's pretty easy to open.

Handy little pinout for everyone:

The power plug is outer sheath negative, center positive and matches the "M" size of power plug you can find at RadioShack. Basically, if you have a power adapter that matches this shape it should be the right size. It's a pretty standard size.

^Note that the screen DOES NOT come with a power adapter. You'll have to provide your own, which really isn't a problem for us modders.

I used a RadioShack power adapter capable of switching output voltages to test the screen. Although the screen worked at 6v, the image was somewhat poor and shaky. 9v gave a perfectly acceptable image, and the screen indeed worked at 12v as advertised. I will be performing some further investigation to see if I can get this working off of 5v.

Image quality is great (for its size), and the audio can get very loud. Overall, I highly recommend you try this screen. I played a little bit of PS2 on it to test it out. Text was fuzzy and pretty much unreadable at that size, but graphics seemed pretty sharp. I'll be posting more information and pictures when I get around to hacking this thing up.

Question, how thin do you think the screen could get to?

Does it work at the standard old 7.4 volts everyone uses? Have you LED modded one yet?

When you remove it from its case it is about 1/2" without any modification whatsoever. The screen is attached by a ribbon cable to the circuit board, so you could lay the two out flat to make it even thinner.

I found a 7805 linear regulator onboard, so yes 7.4v appears to be the minimum voltage for this particular screen. It has a CCFL inside which could be swapped for LEDs of some sort, most likely surface mount LEDs.

Sorry, but I do not have a multimeter that is capable of measuring the screen's current draw so someone with better equipment than I will have to answer that question. Overall, though, I HIGHLY recommend this screen especially at this price.

Do you have a link to the screen? I can't seem to find it on their site.

Is it possible to use RBG with this screen or is it composite only?

How similar is the 3" version? Is it almost the same or completely different?
