DS to TV

Post by Dan the HERO » Sun Jan 09, 2011 11:00 pm

I find it ridiculous that every Nintendo handheld game has been able to be played on a television, until the DS. Which I can completely understand the Wii not having DS compatibilities like the SNES had the Super GB and the GC had the GB Player, due to the touchscreen.

But why couldn't someone take, say, a DS Lite, chop off the top screen, and have that signal (the one going to the top screen) go directly to a TV?? I'm thinking almost like a Plug-N-Play; a GBA/console controller-esque bottom half of a DS, with a chord going to the TV.

Of course, this would only be practical with games where the gameplay is on the top screen, and the touchscreen is only used for menus, commands, etc. (which could be why there isn't a peripheral like this already). But for me, the only games I play are ones such as that, ex. Pokemon, Chrono Trigger, Mario Kart, etc.

Is something like this possible? Would it be hard or easy? Worth it? Thoughts please.

The screens have a proprietary controller that converts the signal to a signal the screen can use.

You would have to build and program a controller to convert the signal to something the TV can use.

So no, not really feasible.

But what makes the screens so different? They're both essentially just monitors. Wouldn't it be the same as modding a GB to hook up to a TV?

What's with a "controller?" and why can't you use the same one? There are still audio and video signals being sent.

Screens use different means to control the pixels to display images. And there are literally hundreds of different ways the screens do this.
The controller takes the signal from a device (Like a dvd player or a game system) and turns that signal into something that the screen can interpret and manipulate into an image.

The problem is that every screen manufacturer uses different ways to get the image. They all think their way is best and will give the best picture. Also everyone patents their way of doing it, so there is no "one" standard way of doing it.

Sucks for the consumer, but thats the way it is.
