Can you swap the GB Color screen with a portable DVD one?

Post by kinjjibo » Wed Aug 19, 2009 2:58 am

I'm just wondering, because I'm going to buy two Gameboy Colors this week and I wanted to know if I could replace the screen so it'll be bigger. It's kinda dumb, but I want to do it if I can. The DVD player is a Haier portable DVD player if you need to know. I'll post pictures of it's guts since it's already gutted if you want. Thanks.

No pics needed - it will not work. The Gameboy Color (like most handheld game systems) uses a custom connection between the screen and mainboard. You cannot use a different screen.

Ok. Thanks. I'll use it for something else, then.

If you want to use it for another project, know two things:

- It needs to have video in (don't just look for the plugs - they sometimes have video-out); and
- You can ditch the disk drive, but you'll need to keep the mainboard to keep it functioning, which may mean it's kinda big.

To eagle5953, yeah, I want to make an NES portable. I need a tutorial first, though, because I've only down paint mods before. I have the NES, screen, but I need a tutorial for the other materials and how. Here's 4 pictures of the guts. It has an A/V output(green input thing), and controls, disk reader, and other junk. Could you tell me what to remove?

The only major component you can likely remove is the disk drive.

Yeah. Everything but the drive needs to stay.

Also, that screen is widescreen, which will stretch NES graphics. Does it have a fullscreen mode?

Edit: wait, wait, wait. AV output, you said? If so, it won't work - it MUST be AV input.

There are a lot of threads on these forums to help you build you NES portable. Just search a bit.

sometimes, if you have a good poke around with the av inputs, you only need the small board, that was my experience.
