Old gameboy color?

Post by endrien » Sat Feb 07, 2009 8:58 am

Today I found my old gameboy color and I was disapointed to discover it didnt turn on. I used fresh batteries and it just won't turn on. I've taken it apart and I havent noticed any problems(that I could see atleast). So, can I fix it? If not what can I do with it?

Please don't post such huge pictures. It broke the page something awful, and my DSL choked.

Moving to the handheld forum...

Maybe a small fuse is blown somewhere.

The fuses are marked as F1, F2 etc. Don't know how many there are on a GBC. Probably 1, max 2. They should be on the bottom half of the board. (Ie, near the battery connectors) They're surface mount, so you need experience with that to fix it. if you're careless you could short the connection where the fuse was, but you still need soldering experience to do that properly.

I have soldered before and have some soldering tools, All I need to know is how I could do it.

Use a multimeter to check if the fuses have blown. Then you can either replace the fuses (hard) or just remove the fuse and bridge the gap with solder. Much eaiser but means the circuit will have no proection and another surge will kill it.

You should also checkout power switch and DC adapter connector. I had problem with theese two, power switch was broken (rusty contacts) and the connector for power suply was stuck (like there is adapter plugged in).... i`m talking about regular gameboy, but it should be the same....

the switch does seem kinda old and rusty, but I dunno. Is there anyway I could try to power it up without the switch?

Try using a wall adapter, the batteries and the adapter use separate fuses, so I doubt both are fried.

If you know anybody with a GBA battery pack, the chargers for pretty much of any of those is the same (even the plug)

sry for necroposting this, but i have the exact same problem. dodgy looking pwrswitch, and no powerup on the gbc. but i checked the fuses with a multimeter and according to it they're still functional. :? any thoughts?

edit: fixed it, it was the powerswitch.
