Nintendo DS - much bigger screens for low-vision

Post by ffomega25 » Wed Feb 04, 2009 2:26 pm

I have a question, I know that a lot of this site was to make consoles portable or to convert them into other consoles and what not....but I have low vision and cannot play the handhelds like anyone else. I could just as easily download an emulator and roms onto my computer like most would do...but i want to try and do this legally (not run the risk of being sued by nintendo or anyone else).

I want to buy the actual games but I'd like to play the handhelds like the sighted ppl.

Has anyone ever thought about making a Nintendo DS with a much bigger display screen and touch screen?

I'd love to have one. I saw one on YouTube. The video was titled Mega DS. It looked like someone took a laptop monitor and a laptop touch screen monitor and configured it to display as output to the DS. Here is the link for it

That was Loopy from pocketheaven.com, and what he did was he figured out the interface that the screens use as well as the touchscreen, and hooked it up to two old tablets he had. As far as I know the information on how to do this has not been widely released or known.

Sorry, but that wasn't made by anyone here, and it's beyond the scope of our average project.

I did find the original webpage for that project, which goes into detail and has more images and videos. It looks like there's just some translation hardware to go between the built-in DS LCD driver and a specific Sharp LCD screen. It doesn't look as simple as 'insert tab A in slot B', but it's certainly not impossible.

You'd be much better off contacting the person who actually made it. Good luck!

If you can't see the text, you set your browser's text size to a bigger one. That's not that hard.

I actually do like this idea.... handy if you want to show lots of people soemthin on such a small screen... whihc i do, becuase im such a good at pokemon ( thanks to one of my friends showing me, otherwise, i wouldnt have even brought a DS.... ) and lots of epople ask me how to get such and such... and its a bit complicated showing more than 5 people at once.... but i like it...

If he gives out any more details about the project, i will definitely give it a shot... he he he.

If you are even remotely skilled enough, he has given ample info to accomplish this. If you cannot understand it now, him releasing more info will not help.

That said, I have been thinking of making a DS with a bottom touch screen, and using the top as a projector; With that, you could play most games on any wall. :D

Would not be too hard, if the top screen is all you need, should be easy. Even easier if it does not need to be portable.

Actually, you suggested that I use a pico-projector with a full game console, then I said I would try a DS projector. You answer was that it would only be good for GBA games.

Although you WERE the guy who said a GB Pocket projector would be cool.
