game boy classic replacement screen?

Post by myersn024 » Thu Nov 15, 2007 5:40 pm

I know it would probably be cheaper to get another Game Boy, but I really need a replacement screen for mine. Anyone have one or know where to get one?

You can easily get one from another gameboy. What kind of gameboy is it? If you mean a GBO, you can get one for about $10 on ebay.
PM me for DS friend codes. PLEASE!

My wife bought this one for me off eBay. The person she bought it from said that there wasn't anything wrong with it, and it plays games fine; it's just that the screen has a few dead lines. If it was just on the left side, I would let it be, but there's dead lines on both sides of the screen and it effects game play. Since it's such a common problem with Game Boy Originals, I really don't want to buy another one site unseen.

Ah, verticals? There are two types.

One is always blank, no matter what.

The other, however, can be seen as working very lightly if the contrast is turned down. on my GBO, I played tetris, when one appeared. I turned the contrast down all the way, and everything around the line was dark. The line, however, appeared as if the contrast was at a normal level. By repeatedly changing it, I got it to come back.

The same applies to the Game Boy Pocket.

I just checked, and these are the kinds that don't go away with changing the contrast.

After checking, there's no replacement sites offering new screens that I know of. Besides, even if you did find one, it'd probably cost more to buy it and have it shipped to you than buying a different GBO. I'd just say grab a different used GameBoy off ebay, and either make sure there's sufficient pictures, or ask the lister to take some close-ups of the screen.

I know this sounds kinda farfetched, but try putting it in the freezer for 30 minutes to an hour, it got rid of about half the lines on mine!

I see what you're getting at with the freezer suggestion, but I don't like the idea of the condensation that will form inside the GBO when it gets taken out. I'm going to check with the used game store that's near by and see if they've got any of the older Game Boys. They may not have a GBO, but they might have a GB Pocket or Color that I'm not opposed to buying. That way I can see them in person first.

All in all, it just sucks since this is the first Game Boy that I've ever owned. I still remember wanting one so bad when they first came out.

Seriously? Man, I feel for you. The GB was the first video game system I ever owned, first game was Kirby's Dream Land. I'd played NES before that, and a few months after I got the GBO, I got the SNES. Love that stuff. Good luck GameBoy hunting!

Ah, nostalgia! This thread prompted me to get my old original, unscratched silver GB out and play a game of Tetris Attack!

My unit is unboxed, but in perfect condition as it has been in the "official" case for years, I have Tetris Attack and Tetris, with instruction booklets.

I was keeping it for nostalgia value in the same way as I have a Snoopy Panoramic G&W, two other G&W and two G&W minis, but if someone wants to offer me a decent price for my GB and carts I might be persuaded - I will keep the case though, it fits other systems, like GP2x or a digital camera and has a second compartment for the games and booklets - handy for storing batteries and SD cards!

It is interesting, the looks of the original GB are quite similar in many ways to modding projects on this forum (pics below).

My game boy pocket (transparent) was my first console ever as well. I still remember getting it with tetris and rechargeables for christmas. Our parents bought it so we (my brother and me) would shut up during long drives (on vacation, mostly). And everytime we would go on vacation, they would buy both of us a new game... Good times. Being a collector now, I kinda wish I had kept the boxes...

@Bacteria: That GB is immaculate......truly badass! If I thought I could afford what you'd want for it, I'd take it off your hands. Anyway, a couple more hours and I'll call the local places and see what they've got. There's one place about 20 minutes from where I live that might have one. If they don't, there's another branch of the same company about an hour away. So, chances are good that I'll find what I'm looking for near by. Otherwise, I'm going to have to hit ebay again, which I don't want to do since there's so much scammin' on that site that it isn't even funny.

Anyway, here's a pic of the setup that my wife got me. A GBO, 7 games, a badass case and a couple other things. Aside from the screen being a little messed up, I'm still very happy with it.

myersn024 - really nice case; mine is a softcase, yours is a lunchbox!! - a very classy one though!

If you can't get it at your stores, feel free to make me an offer, I am sure we can come to an arrangement (it's not like I use it much)....

I live in the UK, so naturally would have to charge cost postage on it (for a guide, look on www.royalmail.co.uk for airmail prices to wherever you are in the world). Naturally, this is postage costs and not bid price which would go on top!!

If you are interested, PM me...

Kyo - my first console (my Father bought them of course) was the home version of Pong back c. 1976. A bright white dot on a black screen made your eyes hurt after a while! I was about 10 at the time - a few years later (also when they were first released) Atari 2600, then Intellivision.

I personally bought Game&Watch, Vectrex, MTX512 computer (for games and assembly language and BASIC programming), Amstrad 8256 (since then, several proper computers!); GB mono, GBA (about 4 in total), GBA SP, GP2x, N64 x 3, Game&Watch (a couple more), GameCube, DS, Playstation 1 (it was going very cheaply!). I have also bought spare N64 controllers and a bundle of NES controllers for modding. As you can tell, I like Nintendo!!

Well, as it turns out, a guy that I work with had a GBO that he didn't mind parting with. Its screen is in great shape, but the lens is a little scratchy. No big deal since I've got the other one that I can swap it with.

GBO screens are soldered to the mobo.

Well, at least mine was.
