Why not use a rechargeable battery, such as an RC car battery and a 7805, that'd leave you some extra space.

"If"?
Your talking like the gameboy is some kind of perpetual motion device.
//tho I do remember you could take the batteries out of erm and roll them in your hands while whispering demonic chants. That would get you another hour or so of game time.
Just stick a Charge Jack on the thing like my SNESp.

My GBC has a built in battery charger, so I can use any AAs and charge rechargeable ones. I hacked a GBC battery pack's circuit into it, you might be able to do the same with a GBO pack.

Don't make any huge ugly switches sticking out if you simply MUST do the LED mods that everyone seems to think are just spectacular. Make it so that when it's off, it looks like a regular gameboy.

Personally, (it is purely personal), I wouldn't put LED's in the mod as you suggest, it would detract from the gameplay significantly. The only reason I would do it is to use ultra-white LED's so when I wasn't playing the games I could use it as a torch (now there's an idea...)
