Using a 7" monitor in a portable console

Post by Shugs81 » Mon Jun 20, 2011 4:36 pm

Right... by mistake I bought 2 7" monitors from eBay... one is for my carpc project but then I have a spare now... it runs on 12v but don't know how to calculate the mah or whatever it is for battery power life...

Is feasible to use it in a handheld?

I'm using 7" HD monitor (headrest) in my universal WMI (wireless video interface. Think techknott's creations for PS3 and Xbox 360). I can tell you mine takes about 7Watts. This one does NOT have tv tuner or build in speakers.

I did a simple test where I connected 5 AA batteries to my monitor and it worked fine. (5 * 1.5V = 7.5V)

So if you get a polymer Li-Ion battery at 7.4v it should power your system fine.

There is a formula to figure out how big of a battery you need based on power usage:

( Ah) = Device's Wattage (W) x Time to run ( Hours) / Battery Voltage (V)
For example, if using a 12V battery pack, and run 10W DC device for 10 hours, you need choose a battery pack with capacity > 8.3Ah, e.g
( 10x10)/12 = 8.3

1000 mAh = Ah, higher mAh will provide longer running time.

Another useful formula is:

Power = Voltage * Current
