Dead Centipede Cab?

Post by Nick » Sun Mar 27, 2011 8:34 pm

Hey board! Long time no post! As you can tell by my very Christmas avatar, which I really need to change.

Anyways, I am helping a friend of mine fix her dead Centipede cabinet, but I don't quite know where to turn. The cabinet turns on and you can hear the hum of the monitor, the red LED on the board lights up, the marquee lights up, and the 1 and 2 player start buttons light up solid, but there is no video or audio or really any response from well anything at all. Can anyone help me? I'll get pictures or even a video if it would help me.

Thanks!
~Nick

It sort of sounds like the CPU isn't doing its thing.
Check to see if it is getting enough voltage w/ a multimeter.

I'd suggest poking the chips into their sockets to see if it's a loose connection too.

Failing that run through the Manual or see if there is a repair log with a similar problem.

Google Result, Service manual:

Google Result, Repair log:

Random questions:
Spoiler:
Are there any signs of damage or repair?

Does anything smell 'burnt'?

Are there any open sockets that should not be?

Are all the chips where they are supposed to be?

Does the CPU warm up?

Does pushing chips into their sockets change anything?

Does any thing smell burnt now?

Meow? May I eat that last doughnut?

Are there any signs of damage or repair?
I don't believe so. It's worn, but not damaged. The insides are a bit dusty so I imagine it hasn't been touched in a while.

Does anything smell 'burnt'?
Again, not that I know of. I'll have to inspect it.

Are there any open sockets that should not be?
Sigh, again, not totally sure.

Are all the chips where they are supposed to be?
Like I said, it doesn't appear to have been touched in a while, and it apparently was working a while ago. So probably not.

Does the CPU warm up?
I'll get back to you on that one.

Does pushing chips into their sockets change anything?
Will test asap.

Does any thing smell burnt now?
Godzilla.

Meow? May I eat that last doughnut?
Bark? Jokes on you. It's a bagel.

Could be a lot of things...
- Harnesses need reseating,
- Dry solder joint(s),
- Cap replacements for monitor,
- Damaged IC's (CPU etc),
- Blown fuses, capacitors and or transistors / resistors,
- Bad power supply,
- Dead CMOS battery.

Stating that you hear a 'humming' sound, it may be the monitor or power supply.
