Stereo Audio Amplifier for Gamecube

Post by Blargaman91 » Wed Nov 07, 2012 10:28 am

I've been building a small stereo amplifier for my Gamecube portable but I'm having serious issues. This amplifier mainly includes just to LM 386 amplifiers so it's two mono amplifiers running in parallel. I've built a mono amplifier with a third LM 386 chip on solderless breadboard with all the capacitors and such that are on the soldered one. The one on the breadboard works great. I left pins 1, 7, and 8 disconnected. So I replicated the EXACT same circuit and built it much more compact on some breadboard with individual copper pads, but with both amplifiers on there. It worked really well at one time, in fact better than the one on solderless board. But now it's been bugging up for some odd reason. As soon as I input 5v it makes CRAZY loud buzzing sounds and they get even worse when you input audio. Nothing I do will help fix this!! I even took out BOTH LM 386 chips from the soldered board and put them on the solderless board, and they worked fine. So nothing is broken. This is confusing me so much, and I can't find any help on Google. I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Sorry for the long explanation. I tried to say only what I needed to.

Well, none of that above crazy information is relevant anymore, but I'd just like to ask the pros and gods of modding this - What do you use for amplification in those portables?!? I'm using a TPA6021A4 and the results are great, but I get a lot of buzzing with the DS Lite speakers I need to use. I'd just love to know how you get flawless sound in those portables with screens that do not have any integrated audio amplification.

A problem with my Gamecube's audio has arisen yet again. This time the problem is with the Gamecube itself. I am experiencing extreme interference on both L and R audio lines, though a little bit more on what I think is R. I disconnected the audio lines from the pre-amp a while back and am using audio straight from the pins of the onboard DAC. I tried to use the pre-amp at one point, though, because the sound isn't very loud without it, but it won't even function. I've supplied it with 5v and with 12v but neither situation will do. The only thing coming out of it is the interference. Tchay mentioned it on another forum page that this would mean the AV chip is damaged, and I won't take that as an answer. I've put way too much work in attaining this Gamecube and cutting it down.

EDIT: Little update, the Gamecube's sound works great and all hooked up to a TV but loud buzzing/interference is introduced with the amp and speakers in my case. The amp and speakers in my case work fine with other inputs. WTF??

EDIT (again): The buggy sound is only really prominent in the main menu, and kind of goes away in game unless you turn volume all the way up.

Ashen wrote:Welp, yea. Had the aforementioned audio noise coming thru on my amp/speakers and I spent most of the day yesterday pissing around trying to fix it. It was most definitely noise coming from the switching regs, it sounded a bit like someone making tea (think pot whistling) and was super damn annoying. After about 6 hours of so of pure frustration I gave up, got super pissed, and beat this copulate with a hammer until I felt good again. The end.

Just kidding, I Worked it all out in a similar fashion as I did on the first Fusion Micro. I put a 20ohm resistor between ground and the audio amp, and A filter inline on the 3.3v power supply to the amp. That got the noise down to "barely noticeable" at full volume. I'm happy.

Yes, I thought it was the regs! Thanks.
