Hey guys. Im having some issues with a PC at work.
Okay, so our old PC crapped out. It had an old PSU that had NO fan.
So, we bought a "new" dell computer. (New to us).
Its all SATA. So, I had to rig up the old hdd from the old machine, so it'd be reocgnized on this new machine. I had to put it on the same IDE and power connector as the diskdrive would go on. Aha. (Each cable had two connectors. So both IDE hdd and disk drive are rigged up.)
Now, heres my issue.
All the hardware thats on this new pc is different than the stuff that was on the old machine. When I try to boot to windows XP on the old hdd (on this new machine), it goes to a windows logo for half a second, and then the PC reboots. Why? (basically I took the old harddrive from the broken pc, and plugged it into the new pc that has new hardware. it wont work. Why)
If I cannot get this working, then I may have to make this drive (which is setup as "Master with non compatible ATA) appear inside my computer. (So I can still access the old HDD's files, while on the new HDD.)
How do I do this?
Thanks guys. Kinda need a response fast, as this is a work pc. All of our info is on this drive.

Re: PC problems
From my understanding, it's doing that, because it doesn't have the correct drivers for the new computer installed. If you need a copy of XP, I can send one your way.
But shouldn't you be able to just plug a new PSU into your old computer?

Re: PC problems
Of course it doesn't work: Acute problem is that the drive controller on the new system is not set up to be functional/compatible with the drivers on the old system's OS (if they exist at all).
Macro reason is you just can't do this. An installation is compatible with one machine, and it's close brothers; you simply cannot take an operating system like Windows XP and throw it 10 years into the future.
It's like trying to use your VCR with a modern 3D LED HDTV, if it even has RCA inputs.
Set the drive up as a slave an be merry

Re: PC problems
I've tried setting it as slave. It doesnt show up under "My Computer", and I'm almost positive that the drive isnt pooched.
Any suggestions?

Re: PC problems
Use an external USB enclosure to retreive the data from the old drive.

Re: PC problems
Don't have one. We need the files back fast, as this is what my work rely's on. Is tehre anyway to configure the drive, so it shows up?
Re: PC problems
Well, if you need the files back, but quick; then you don't have time to be mucking about with adapters, jumpers and software settings.
Spend the $20-$30 to buy an 3.5" IDE enclosure and get that data.

Re: PC problems
Check under Disk Management in MMC on the new computer's hard drive to see if it even recognizes that it's there.
Are the jumpers on the drive set properly?
Does the old hard drive have any sort of drive encryption installed?

Re: PC problems
Slave drives need to go on the second connector of an 80-pin IDE cable, so you need to switch the drive to the other connector.
You could also just set it back to Master and change the BIOS to boot from the SATA drive (the SATA harddrive does have an OS, yes?)
If you just need the files now, less so than a 100% production ready system, burn a Knoppix disc and boot from it. Knoppix should have little trouble configuring itself for your system and has applications to read most files.

Re: PC problems
It wont boot when changed to master. I explain what it does above.
I'll try moving it to the other connector.
