laptop touch pad

hi i ripped apart an old hp omnibook 2100 for its touch pad. it has 1 chip on it that is a synaptics. it has 4 wires (red black yellow and white) that are connected to the laptop.
i cut up an old usb wire and it had the same wires. i plugged it in, and it said not recognised.
i dont think its usb. and help?

you plugged it into the same laptop? You would need a driver for it otherwise, maybe.
Are you sure it is not PS/2?

It is certainly PS/2. I have yet to see a trackpad that isn't PS/2, even in a rather recent laptop.
