Internet Connection Problem

When i directly connect an ethernet connection to my laptop it will not connect and use the connection. How can i modify or activate this connection so i can use the internet from my laptop?

Are you plugging into a router/swicth, or directly into to the DSL/cable modem's ethernet jack? Is your laptop's ethernet adapter getting an IP address?

Plugging directly into the modem. I removed the firewall, and it says "connected" but when i try to open firefox, it says the standard error screen.
