Replacing the mic on a DVR

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to replace the mic on a voice recorder with a jack for a better mic? What I want is to be able to hook either an FM reciever or some external mic to it. I understand that the mic itself may require it's own power source, but my question is, will it even work?

yeah it might. sounds possible at least.

you can get headphone jacks that have a built in switch that opens when you insert a plug. so you can keep the original mic there, and just add a little jack that overrides it when a better mic is connected.
