Psone portable Rev 2 Complete

Post by blaze3927 » Tue Nov 02, 2010 5:00 am

Well it took me over 800 posts
but i Finished my first portable
Yes i Fried over 20 n64's
three (give or take 1) ps1/one's
four or five screens
but it's done

the first revision was a shocking hot glue contraption that I did 6 months ago that barel lasted two days.
This one isnt built for looks but is sturdy.
I got sick of trying to get microchips working for my n64 portable wip, so i sidetracked a bit and built a psoneP out of my spare/stashed parts.

Specs:
5" viscom sceen:
*Remote control, for those times when you cant reach the volume/power button...xD
*ntsc/PAL automatic switching
*brightness/contrast etc adjustment
*mono audio amp with auto headphone switching, oh and a headphone port.
in built memory card
dual analog controller, original board squishy buttons
12v lithium battery, unknown mAh salvaged from laptop cells. room for larger cells, last around 1.5 hours
protection and level indicator circuit
psone mobo
free spinning disc drive

yes the screen is huge, the one i wanted to use is way smaller but upon testing seemed to imply that it is fried.

Im relatively new with abs cement, and i sanded this one like crazy but all it did was make the cement smoother without actually giving it the clean, molded into the case look, i guess i'll have to start with higher grits next time.
The screen is sturdy and held on by screws, it is easily replaceable and still very function-able if i ever wanted to swap out the screen.
The case is, yes the shape of a pizza slice, this is the natural shape of the project box i got from jaycar.
Its quite comfortable to hold, however my hands are medium size and have the strength of a piano player xD, any larger/smaller/weaker and it could become a bit uncomfortable if held looking down,
also when the disc is in theres not much of a gap between r1/l1 and the disc, so care is required. However this will be resolved if i can get the psone to play of mini cd-r's.
i plan to install a modchip later to avoid continually using the swap disc trick, so i can play my non scratched backups easily.
Also recently discovered flaw, lame: i installed the memory card into the player 2 port, so 2 of my games cant save, odd that ones multi player aswell.
speed freaks and disney's dinosaur, spyro 1-2-3 work fine same with james bond. odd

this will probs be for sale in two weeks or so as it was built mostly for an upcoming roadtrip. if anyone is interested in advance shoot me a pm with an offer.

Spyro in the car...finally

Cheers for the positive replies,
on a quick side note is there any recommended guides for sanding abs cement?

Use a low grit sandpaper. Like a 40 grit or 60 grit. Sand it off quickly because you don't need to get it perfect since you will be using an epoxy or bondo over the top of it. Sand it off where it is a little lower then you need it so you can put the epoxy/bondo over the top of it.

Finally, a psone portable. You are my new hero!
If you're getting 404'd when trying to use the links in stickies, try this tutorial to find that juicy info.

oohhhh, so you put epoxy/bondo over the top of the cement? REVELATION, i always though abs cement as a substitute for epoxy xD. That explains a lot.
and by quickly you mean while its still not completely set or just do a quick job of it once it's hardened?

Yea you have to put a layer of something over the Abs. When it dries it leaves holes, so no sanding it and then painting it. By quickly, I just meant don't waste time trying to do it slowly and good looking. Just sand it down.
