Sprocket64 - Nintendo64 Handheld. Video and LOB64 Test!

Post by Mario » Sun May 23, 2010 1:53 pm

I started this some time ago and finally finished it. It is named the Sprocket64 (because I thought that would be a cool name when I started it. :P) and it has a 7" widescreen, 3.5 hours of battery life, and full compatibility with all N64 games. The screen can switch from 4:3 to 16:9, so non-widescreen games aren't stretched. :)
This one has an LOB64 port in it, as did my previous one, so you know what that means - LOB64 test! That video is at the bottom of this post.
It also has daftmike's low-battery indicator. The LED's are in the power button, and it goes from white to red.

You can see the worklog here: http://forums.modretro.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=442" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And here's a video demo-ing my Sprocket64, followed by some pretty pictures. Then, it's my favorite "WIP" pics and the LOB64 video. Enjoy!

W.I.P. Pictures:

The original case idea. :P

The case is made from pieces of plastic from an old printer/scanner. I cut them out, glued them together, and used bondo to fill in the edge gaps. Then, I sanded the edges round and painted it.

Almost everything hooked up and mounted:

And, LOB64 video! The screen on my Retro64 is kind of dark, but the camera exaggerates it. There is quite a noticeable drop in brightness when splitting the video signal two ways, so maybe a video amp should be used for even two portables only. I am going to order a video amp and try some stuff out, and probably make a Klobio Box.

You can see the LOB64 thread here:

It's beautiful! What kind of screen did you use? I've found 7" screens, but I could never find anything that could switch aspect ratios.

IIRC, he used a screen from a portable DVD player.

Nice job, Mario.

I'm assuming a second display that doesn't have the all the DVD stuff going on in it.

Didn't realize that the LOB port glowed! Awesome!

Look, I know I'm going to catch a lot of heat for posting in an older thread, but. . . . WOW! Oh my gosh! This thing you made is just filled with SO MUCH WIN. I actually found this thread via a Google image search and I literally felt compelled to comment. For it being an amateur pet project, it's looks like it works really, really well. I mean, it does look like the predecessor to a Sega Gamegear. . . but MUCH better -- and for that, you should give yourself a nice pat on the back. ;)

Now, if we could slim that down for usability purposes, have it mass-manufactured and sell it in an electronics store like Best Buy, P.C. Richards or hh gregg, you could make yourself a mint for us old school gamers. LOL.

O.K. I'm rambling now. Awesome work. I'm definitely gonna show this video off to my friends. :D
