Making Hinges?

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

Making Hinges?

Post by Seaniccus » Mon Oct 01, 2007 11:42 am

I want to add a "DS" like hinge to my portable, and in a smiliar fashion, have the screen above the buttons. THe roblem is, I have no real idea where to start with this.

Is there any chance this can be done by hand, or whill I have to have it made , or use a laser cutter?

You could make it pretty easily with regular hinges, if you wire the screen up with some ribbon cable.

Sort of like this:

The hinges aren't angled because they're on the back of the base. yeah that's it.

It's not as nice looking as routing the wires inside hollow tubes for hinges but it's a lot easier. 8)

Like small metal hinges from the hardware store? I guess. I'm a little worried that it won't come out "even" and the "back" won't line up, but I guess I'll have to go to the hardware store and take a look.

Another problems iI want it to "Stop" at a point, so the hinge doesent rotate 180 degrees. They probably sell those I guess.

I wish my screen was already here so i could start figuring the case out.

Open up a PSone screen and use the hinges from it.

May I suggest this.

And you don't have to get them from TAP. Most plastic supply places carry tons of useful little parts like that for pennies.

vomitsaw - nice find.

Other alternative is to make your own. A hinge is only a series of loops with a thin circular piece of metal through them all. You could make hinge even out of two pieces of flat plastic with tiny holes bored through and a rivet / nut and bolt through both sides. just a thought.

Wow, you are tottally one of my heroes.

I'm going to swing by tap plastics and the hobby shop today to see what they have in the means of case parts.
