Easiest system to hack into a portable?

Post by jester070993 » Wed Dec 31, 2008 9:54 pm

I just got Ben Heck's books on hacking video game consoles, and I am now trying to decide which console to pick and hack. But I am having a hard time choosing, because I have never done anything like this before. I have read the beginning part on all the consoles. So what would be the easiest console (out of the ones that come in the book) to hack into a portable?

NES, SNES or atari. They're all relatively easy

All the systems in the book are easy to hack except the psone. The reason I mention the psone, because when making a portable, you have to deal with the disk mechanism.

A NOAC like the Yobo FC or the Super Joy Power Player Game Player Game is probably the easiest system. Some look small enough to not require a cart relocation, they are cheap, and there's no feeling of guilt of destroying a first party system. That seems to be the general feeling around here anyway. But I've also heard original NES, SNES mini, and a few people have even started with N64, although it is actually pretty hard from what I've seen.

Out of the projects in the book I'd say do either the NES or the SNES.

there's really nothing difficult about building a n64 portable other than building the case

Yeah, I think I'll do the SNES, but maybe the NES. Why is PSOne so hard? Like the disc mechanism?

the psone isn't that hard, it's just not as easy.

:?: what? the n64 doesn't get that hot, all you need to do is modify the heatsink a little

N64 also needs two different voltages.

There are a lot of factors like which do I have more games for, which is more availible/cheaper, and should I make one I don't own but it really boils down to:

Which one do I enjoy the most?

Haha, thanks. So I'll do the SNES, but I might switch to the NES after I get more into the book.

good choice. to be honest i'd start with something easy to but i dont have ANY of the consoles in the book. i have a Playstation... but not a PSone which sucks for me... oh well... i could always trade with someone... but its not like people need their PSOnes anymore anyways. Also, the hardest part is FINDING and getting the screen... well it is for me and my PS2p... oh well...

good luck with your SNES mate.
