SNES or mini-SNES

Post by Janobehove » Thu Jul 24, 2008 8:00 pm

I plan on buying this book and using my old SNES. (I've already disassembled it). Do you HAVE to use a SNES mini for the how-to in the book, or can you make it with a SNES original.

It really isn't that big, easily holdable in your hands.

The case would be bigger, but it's essentially the same.

While the board of the first versions of the original SNES is pretty big, the board in the later version is very similar to the SNES mini. The main difference is that it is about 2" wider, and a lot of that width is grounding strips that can be cut smaller.

Here's a comparison:

You can tell the difference between an earlier and later model SNES by looking at the eject button. On the early ones, "EJECT" is printed on it in white, but on the later ones it is molded into the button.

Ya, you could do it, it's just you're pretty much on your own if you do, as the book can't really help you; things are in different places.
You can use the SNES custom handheld place to get help if you need it. Essentially it will be custom because your project is slightly different.

Use mini unless you don't mind higher power requirements, more heat, bulkier design, odd placement of components, and of course, the separate controller board

If none of this will make you anxious, than by all means, go for it.
