What do you plan on doing?

Anyone can get better at wiring. Get your hands on a soldering iron, solder, some desoldering braid (available at Radio Shak) and some old computer boards, then practice desoldering stuff and soldering it back on.

I was eight when I started messing around with solder. It's just another skill that gets better with practice. If you don't bother trying, of course you'll still suck.

I plan on doing a SNES portable. There's a used game store right near my house that has a bunch of old systems, and I think there's a Radio Shack right near it.

I just need to get Ben's book, and get some money.

Thanks

that depends on many factors:

* quality of your case
* level of skill
* amount of time you have to give to project

for example: i'm not doing an snes, but the retro duo. it's a really easy system to work with. this is my first project ever, so i'm learning along the way. i've been working over a month now. but, i have limited time to give to the project. also, i'm somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to the case. i want a very professional looking case, so it's taking a lot longer. if i didn't care about the case, i probably would have been done about 2 weeks after i started. and now that i've figured out soldering a bit better, i am faster at it. still not very fast, but faster than i was when i started!

so basically... i'm saying it could take anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months to a year or so. sorry i don't have a more simple answer...
they call me the Queen of Bondo, though maybe i should be called the Queen of Epoxy Putty

Grab yourself a soldering iron (like $15 at ratshack), solder, desoldering braid/desoldering iron/bulb, a multimeter, and some old busted electronics. Practice soldering components until you get good at it. There are hundreds of soldering tutorials on youtube. Just do a search.

Anyone can make a portable with a little research and a lot of help from ben's book.

Soldering is not everything. Portabilizing is harder. You need to be good at case making, painting, dremeling etc. You can't have both left hands ;)

I find portables a little too hard. With all the wiring that needs to do. Im the type of person that doesnt like to take a good game system out of its case incase I break it.

Now, when you get cash you should try a laptop project. I know it sounds way harder, but the dreamcast is a great laptop project to start with. Sounds hard, yes. But really its easy.

I recommend you seek out a basic electronics textbook. Try to make sure it's from the nineties or later. It's not difficult to learn on your own if you take it slow, and even with a basic grasp of electronics, you will be likened UNTO A GOD by those without the knowledge.
