go to radio shack and buy several tubes of silicon heatsink lubricant and
glob it on the heatsink. stick a tube in your pocket and take it with your portable, and if it gets hot, blow it repeatedly and replace lubricant.

if you still want to, you can go to radioshack and buy a bunch of cheap little batteries, LEDs, lightbulbs, speakers, holders, ect. and show him where the connections go and let him go trigger happy with an iron or soldering gun.

Idea
if you want to save money and be creative, you can find a trophy shop or use a case of something to get engraving plastic. Use an X-acto knife to measure and cut out squares of material. you can use the rubber of the key mechanism to superglue to the rear of each square to simulate the original key....

excellent use of the PS1 analog control cursor mushroom. The tactile switches may need some hot glue and buttons. you may try the triggers from the NES standard controller or PS1 controller. Is it backlit or frontlit with LEDs?
