Re: Soldering iron/gun
Like always start out building your soldering and desoldering skills on dead electronic devices. Try to remove the components, add wires, ect. This will give you the baseline for how long you might need to hold the trigger to get the tip hot enough. Just remember to tin your wires. That means you me...

Re: Where to start?
Where are you with soldering? Like have you ever soldered/de-soldered before, own a soldering iron/gun, any general experience with electronic component? If you can do the grunt work, and that involves soldering you can get a portable made. The area of case modding is going to be more work, and more...

Re: Commdore 64 and modern LCD
Well according to the old-computers article, it has RGB. Luma, Chroma, and composite. That's what they said, honestly sounds like S-Video to me. However if the C64 is only able to do Composite, that's not all bad. If you have the money/time you can get a composite -> RGB converter. It's not the best...

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 won't boot from usb drive
Try the program unetbootin it has options for Linux distros. If that still doesn't work. You might have to try a different USB drive. Some just don't work for booting OS off of. This is the best site I could find for a list of what flash drives will work for booting. Let us know how things work out....

Re: SS's 13th and the world's smallest N64p, The TriSixtyFource.
As a friend of mine once said. Only with computers (and video games) can you say, mine's smaller and it's a good thing.
Nice mod, that' thing is tiny. It may even rival the commercial built clones out there.... if there were any.

Re: Can you tell when a USB drive is plugged into a computer?
I know that at GM they have on their workstations have disabled USB write functions. You can completely disable USB if you wanted. Would make the computer rather useless if you ask me. If you're talking about checking to see if someone has plugged a thumb drive into the computer, check the logs. Mos...

Re: smoking tobacco
I really don't smoke. Only time I have is because I had to during a truth or dare. Smoking is not something you'd want to pickup. Smoking is known to have a diminishing effect on health. While you might not get the biggies like Emphysema or Lung cancer, you will get a problems like shortness of brea...

Re: fastest memory setup?
If your computer uses PATA, I'd say go with Compact flash. Its natively compatible with PATA, it's fast and small, and it's low on power drain. Further then that you can find Compact flash cards in sizeds as large as 128GB. Honestly I've thought of the idea of building a server years ago that would ...

Re: Google celebrates Pac Man!
Last night in my class I heard that Mozilla.com went down as a result of the glitchy music from the google pacman. Namely you'd leave the page but still hear the music and so, so many people went to Mozilla's site to compain or report it that it caused a DDoS to their server. Rather funny I think. -...

Re: shrinking PC power supply
Depending on output of the power supply you need it might be easier to by a Mini-ITX PSU. Their store has ranges from 80W to 160W. Not that big, but it is a lot easier. If this is not what you are looking for at all. The only other option would be to re-design the PCB the PSU is built on. It's possi...

Re: Compsite to VGA converter question??? Please help
This may not be a fix for you but there are VGA boxes for the Dreamcast on Ebay . I know the Dreamcast can output RGB and to a point a VGA signal, but from the looks of the box it has the ability to take video input from RCA plugs... or you can mod it with RCA plugs. If anyone has owned one let us k...

HP Pavilion 6000 - Ubuntu/XP FireFox 3.6 Chrome IE8 Acer Aspire One - Ubuntu Chrome FireFox 3.6 HP Pavilion (Desktop) - Ubuntu FireFox I generally stay with Firefox, but have found that Chrome's smaller menu bars makes it better for the tiny screen on my Aspire One. That and I think it uses less ram...

Re: Remember this beauty?
Track balls are nice, for there intended use. I have one that I use with my desktop that is great for most use and games were speed and accuracy isn't a high priority. A fps isn't really that good for trackballs (imo), as your thumb is generally not as fast as your whole arm, and you have to train y...

Re: Which Antivirus Software do you use ? Why?
I normally use AVG on my windows computers. But since finding Comodo, I'm thinking of switching. Comodo has a neat optimization scan feature so scans don't take so long. Sandbox, kind of like a quarantine, but the program is still allowed to work. A little better interface then AVG And it's free! -S...
