Ok, so I finally got one of the 1x cards working consistently without the battery. It took me a little bit to understand the passive circuitry to work out why it worked fine with the battery and failed without it, despite the memory being nonvolatile. Probably 2x4-way switches. It would be a bit tricky since the 4Mbit chips are 16-bit. They do, however, have a byte-mode operation mode, so they can work as 8-bit, it just makes the bank switching more complicated. The latest 64Drive menu appears to have added Memory Pack dumping, so I will be able to offer data transfers if and when I manage to get this all figured out. If the B button works, but nothing else does, I would bet the problem is with the CLK line (yellow wire). Check not only the wire, but also follow the trace on the board coming out from that hole for continuity and make sure you didn't mess up the trace when you desoldered the connector.

Well, that was the wrong pitch :( I got it figured out though, 1.25mm pitch, not 1.0. Unfortunately, I can't get any 1.25mm pitch samples from Molex, but I believe they should work. Also, Molex doesn't have SMD connectors in the 1.25 pitch, so no drop-in replacement. Kyocera has a line of 1.25mm SMD...
