Re: DMG multi-mod
I just finished the NES controller daughterboard. Haven't done the last wiring on the GB board itself, but I'm close to having the gamepad portion of the mod complete. Here's what it looks like (the board is mounted to the Game Boy board through the holes indicated in the photo I posted earlier, so ...

Re: Want to build an SNES repro cart
What's the easiest way to determine the capabilities required by a specific game? I mean, ROM and save sizes are easy, but how can I tell what expansion chips, if any, are required by a specific game? I know the main way to do it would be opening up an original of that game, but I'm thinking of unre...

Re: Cart emulator progress thread
If I properly understand the reason for needing to hit reset in order to save, it's because the save is stored in volatile SRAM which is gone at power-off, but reset does not actually power-cycle the console, allowing the cart menu software to detect the existence of a save in the SRAM and save it t...

Re: DMG multi-mod
I've actually seen that guy's version of the dumper, but that was awhile ago and he wasn't very far along. I like how he's using an Atmel with a USB transceiver on-chip rather than relying on a separate USB<->UART chip. Hopefully he posts some more details about his build and I'll definitely look in...

Re: DMG multi-mod
My current plan for the gamepad portion of the mod is, as I said, to first wire up the buttons as an NES controller, then convert that to USB using the conversion circuit here http://raphnet.net/electronique/snes_nes_usb/index_en.php . For that, I'm using a slight modification on my micro NES pad th...

DMG multi-mod
I've been planning this particular mod for quite awhile now, but I've finally gotten comfortable enough with my surface-mounting and pcb fabrication skills to actually publicly display my progress. This all began out of wanting to build one of these GBC cart readers for backing up my save files and/...

Re: Micro NES controller board
Got the resistors in today and finished up the board. Tested it and it works great. Interestingly (and completely coincidentally), it's almost exactly the same size as an SD card (and with the shape of the traces, you could cut the one corner and make it even more exact if you felt like it...) http:...

Re: Want to build an SNES repro cart
It seems like all of the chips that I find >4Mbit are 2.7-3.6v, whereas the SNES cart provides 5v. Would, say this chip http://www.microchip.com/wwwproducts/Devices.aspx?dDocName=en549546 work, using a 3.3v regulator? I'm looking for an EEPROM that would fit the bill but so far, no luck (most of wha...

Re: Want to build an SNES repro cart
I'm not new to electronics, I'm a 4th year software and embedded systems engineering dual major and am more than capable of doing this, I just need a place to start. Why do you suggest against flash ROM? I'm open to any suggestions as long as it can be erased by a programmer rather than requiring a ...

Re: Micro NES controller board
The etch came out great, I have the IC mounted, now I'm just waiting for the resistors to come in (should be in by tomorrow, I hope). So I can confirm that the etching mask is certainly doable at-home, and so is soldering the SMT version of the 4021 (1.27mm pitch is easy). The resistors shouldn't be...

Re: Micro NES controller board
I made a few adjustments, made the traces larger and moved the button pads to the standard 0.1" pin header spacing. Still having issues with attachments, so here's the Eagle schematics and the 600dpi images. http://www.mediafire.com/?6c5ld1kk1p4r37i

Micro NES controller board
I made this for another project I'm working on and thought I'd share. It's a PCB mask for wiring up a NES controller on a very small (~1" square) board. There are pads for the controller wires and holes for wiring in the buttons, so it'd be useful for a project using existing buttons (I'm using it t...

Want to build an SNES repro cart
I'm interested in creating an SNES repro cart, but the info for doing so is rather spread out and most places I find someone attempting it, they just get told it's not worth the effort and that's the end of it. Yes, I know I could buy a flashcart. Yes, I (think) I understand the amount of work invol...

Re: DMG Gameboy Ribbon Cable
I just realized that I totally missed the handheld gaming forum, sorry... -_- Anyway, I found somebody who has started to diagram out the Game Boy's boards in Eagle, so based on that, I at least know the pin spacing for the socket's footprint on the board, I just don't know the size/spacing for the ...

Re: New to the forum
Ok, nevermind. I just got emailed that they were mod-approved. Guess that's how it works around here. I have a few projects lined up, so I look forward to posting here for tips and to post updates as I move forward
