Re: Creative computer enclosure ideas!

Another thing you could try would be to make the thinnest computer you could. It would have an immense footprint, however. Kind of how I would imagine it (with adapted graphics card): http://www.geocities.com/eagle5953/unrelated/benheck/flat_comp.png It would end up looking a bit like those large th...

Re: My GIMP artwork.

They look really good. The controller is entirely convincing, especially the keypad area. It looks like a sticker is supposed to go there. The two games are less convincing, probably because the system logos on the left side are impossibly vertical - I mean, they do not deviate by a single pixel. Pe...

Re: Creative computer enclosure ideas!

Everybody said it first, but I also was going to suggest an original xbox. Dead xboxes are pretty cheap - I bought one on eBay (only issue was faulty disk drive) for $11 shipped. Other than that, the plastic brackets for the hard drive and optical drive would be ideal. Few potential problems: - Did ...

Re: WTB: 360 and PS3 Laptops willing to pay high.

There is no such thing as getting a 360 or PS3 laptop "ASAP." Even Ben, who has done several of them, takes a few months at least. To expect someone to make one "ASAP" also would increase the price, presumably. So unless you're willing to drop some serious dime (probably in the $5,000 to $10,000 ran...

Re: Modular, removable screen concept

I'm planning to buy soldering and de-soldering guns tomorrow! Don't. Guns are too big. You want a soldering iron and some desolder braid. I apologize for the wrong choice of words - I meant irons (I guess I didn't realize there was a distinction). Feeling noobish. I bought a 15w and a 40w as recomm...

Re: Anyone wanna suggest some good co-op nes and snes games?

What, nobody has even mentioned NBA Jam? That game was the first real multiplayer game I remember playing to death (and then some). I still love playing that game, and I don't even care much for basketball. Plus, it came out for just about every system x3 and, as a sports title, can be found in the ...

Re: Anyone here left handed?

I call myself left-handed, but like all southpaws, we learn to do some things right-handed. Door Opening: right-handed Eating: left-handed Golfing/Batting: right-handed Mousing: right-handed Shooting: right-handed Throwing: either (can throw a football well with either hand, it's true! better with r...

Re: Modular, removable screen concept

How about using neodymium magnets? Not just to hold it in place, but also as the connectors? Like so: http://i44.tinypic.com/10h1z77.png Dude, magnets? That's a freakin' awesome idea that hadn't occurred to me before! However, I don't know what I "will be doing," as I suppose I should figure out ho...

Re: Modular, removable screen concept

*knew you'd come around* In all seriousness, that is another reason of which I hadn't thought. Witness the power of collaboration! If you did intend on doing something like that, it seems to me that the best, least intrusive way would be to have a groove in your portable with the modded mini-usb at ...

Re: Modular, removable screen concept

Also, it would be better to only have video going to the screen, because why would the speakers be attached to the screen? That is just dumb. There are three possible reasons: one, that the speaker is part of the screen portion; two, the headphone out portion is part of the screen portion; or three...

Re: Modular, removable screen concept

Why not just a regular, cheap ol' pin header? USB is more durable than headers to repeated insertions due to unexposed pins. Beyond that, I think it just looks better! edit: One issue that just occurred to me, however, is what would happen if you connected it via usb to something else, such as a co...

Re: Modular, removable screen concept

All good ideas, but I want something that is very small (not Cat5) and very common (not Firewire or DisplayPort). There won't be a cable portion of it at all - I was imaging it to slide in cartridge-style (similar to the VMU of the Dreamcast). Perhaps I will post a graphic of what I had in mind. Als...

Re: Modular, removable screen concept

I think the usb works just like AV compenent cables or coax. The outer rim which is always metal, is used for the ground connection. That's why USB ports always have metal shieldings around the prongs and are soldered along with the prongs to the mobo. So yes, i do think you can use USB as 5 prong ...

Modular, removable screen concept

To save on the time and expense of hacking a pocket TV screen, I thought about making a modular screen that could be transferred between portables. After all, you can't play more than one at a time! Some searching on these forums showed a few others who had the idea, most notably: http://www.forums....

screens that don't work - always the case?

It seems to me that the reason that most LCDs can't work in a portable is because the console uses analog video and the "screens that don't work" use digital exclusively, and it's too difficult to create a converter. However, does that mean that if the original system used digital to begin with, you...
