Can i switch my iPod nano second generation from auto-sync to manual music transfer without iTunes deleting all my music?

If this is not possible does anyone have any reccomendations for a third party program that would replace iTunes (that is not crap)?

I don't see how the average desktop PC could possibly need more than a gig of RAM when running XP.
