Re: VGA output via fpga

@Marshall - just to confirm, does the board have analog VGA out on the DVI port as well? Did you manage to find a chip which does both HDMI / DVI and analog output at the same time. If it can switch to Component output too, then that's great. I'm wondering what the N64 will look like on a nice CRT n...

Re: VGA output via fpga

Hi, Marshall, I'm still not sure if direct HDMI output is the way to go? I think it will be difficult to get the voltage swing right so it will work with all TV's / monitors. (The HDMI output works fine with my Samsung LCD TV, but not with my monitor.) The GC HDMI project is on hold atm, I'm just so...

Re: VGA output via fpga

Hey, Marshall, It's been a long while since we last spoke, but I found some spare time to play with some retro goodness. I registered at GC Forever yesterday to mention a possible HDMI mod for the Gamecube. I didn't check your progress on here first, and so glad to see the N64 board has DVI too now....

Re: VGA output via fpga

Damn it, Marshall - that is one nice looking PCB! I would gladly buy one of these, please. :P It even has a proper Analog Devices DAC chip and 8MB? SDRAM on it. mmmm I love stuff like this because it shows some of the true potential of the console. (I can't believe they went with compoSH1Te video on...

Re: GameCube DD - possible method of making it SLIMMER...

Hi, I had a look at the two new drives last night. They're both Dual Layer writers, so they look too complex to bother figuring out the pinouts etc. There's an HP drive and a HL (Hitachi / LG) drive, and both appear to have a Panasonic pickup / mech. So instead of attempting to use those, I grabbed ...

Re: GameCube DD - possible method of making it SLIMMER...

Hi, Yeah, soldering to the ribbon cable is a proper pain. I use flux quite a lot (which helps), but usually one of those Kester flux pens. The flux is a quite thin, so I need to get hold of some flux paste really. I managed to solder the ribbon connections for the tracking / focus coils and I just s...

Re: GameCube DD - possible method of making it SLIMMER...

Hi, Just an update - I bought two more laptop drives. At least one of them should be here tomorrow. I never looked into the Wii DD until last night though - the Wii laser looks almost identical to the one in this Quanta laptop drive, so that confirms that the Wii drive is also made by Panasonic. It'...

Re: GameCube DD - possible method of making it SLIMMER...

Yep, it's two separate projects (closely related though). You could actually use CF card, optical drive, or an SD card if need be, but hard drives are a nicer solution in most cases (especially for the GC). tbh, when reading my posts back, I realize that it's very much a case of "infomation overload...

Re: GameCube DD - possible method of making it SLIMMER...

Hi, Tchay, and Sir Knight, ;) (sorry, just watched Solomon Kane. Not bad. A few more scary monster fights would have been nice though). Yep, got the pinouts thanks (did I reply back then? I think I'm loosing some short-term memory, so you'll have to bear with me). I can't seem to find the pinouts on...

Re: GameCube DD - possible method of making it SLIMMER...

Ohhh, that. It's been many years since I watched that. I like Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, and other Mel Brooks stuff, but The Producers (new version) was terrible IMHO. Gene Wilder is a genius though. "What, are you serious?... Fuzzy Wuzzy was a woman?". LMAO... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD_xX...

Re: GameCube DD - possible method of making it SLIMMER...

Hi, The GDR-8082N is just a standard laptop drive by the looks of it. Most laptop drives are termed "slim" by most manufacturers, so there's nothing special about it tbh (apart from being able to read GC / Wii disks with RawDump apparently). Again, the ability to read GC / Wii disks doesn't necessar...

Re: GameCube DD - possible method of making it SLIMMER...

OK, this isn't exactly "required reading", but it might give a bit more background on the GC DD and optical drives in general... I don't know why I didn't spot this before, but the laser pickup chip on the GC DD is clearly marked as a HUL6006 (under the metal shield), so it's somewhat similar to the...

Re: GameCube DD - possible method of making it SLIMMER...

Hi, I think the LG drives just happened to have features in their firmware which allowed backups to be made, but it's worth a thought. I did look at the PSP UMD, but I don't think the UMD mech would be able to read the edge of a GC disk? The ability to hook up the drive mech to the GC is purely depe...
