Re: Almost done...
If you use a 7.4v battery instead of the 12v, no issues with powering the screen, portable also stays cooler. System works too. The controller board isn't just the LED, and the controller, also something to do with timing from the fan (someone said that somewhere), which is why you need to keep the ...

Re: Trimming the Dreamcast motherboard a bit
The parts you can be pretty sure are fine to trim is the grounding, as on the DC, there are pin-throughs, which means, if there are multi-layers to the board, the other layers will be grounding too at those places. It seems that older DC boards have the separate drive boards (like mine do) whereas t...

Re: IntoDream - bacteria's DreamCast project
Failed with slim laptop drive, didn't know what I was doing. Nice slim drive motor, but couldn't find the connections to make it work! Didn't expect to get the laptop drive working anyway, worth a punt.

Re: IntoDream - bacteria's DreamCast project
Excellent advice, I appreciate it. You mentioned: You need to keep the actual laser intact, but you can change out the focusing lenses for smaller, more suitable for portablizing laser mechanism. You could get the lenses from a laptop drive. That was my inspiration - so I got a laptop drive! There a...

Re: IntoDream - bacteria's DreamCast project
Bought a cheap laptop CD drive unit, a TEAC 24x Max CD-ROM reader. Says it takes 5v at 1.5 amps (WTF)! Seriously doubt I will be able to change the optics over, but hey, if I can, will be fantastic! Seriously doubt I will succeed with the laptop drive, however, only cost me £1 so don't really care -...

Re: IntoDream - bacteria's DreamCast project
I just use a cheap pencil tip soldering iron off e-bay. 30w. About £4 each. Tend to throw one away after a full project, tips get in a bad way, still cheap enough, so who cares! Smaller motor is ok - eg a GameCube rumble motor (remove the metal disk and the motor is balanced) however, the laser asse...

Re: IntoDream - bacteria's DreamCast project
Please do! So far, it hadn't been difficult, as long as your soldering skills are good. Pity the drive unit is so thick though, otherwise you could make a portable quite slim.

Re: IntoDream - bacteria's DreamCast project
Several hours to basically have the height about half the height of the original connector. Between the various modifications (this one, reduce drive assembly, etc), looking to reduce by about 25mm total (as I recall). I need to move the daughter board a few millimeters across anyway, this allows th...

Re: IntoDream - bacteria's DreamCast project
Cool update lads! Finished the wiring to the connector. Boy, that was very time consuming!! Each wire tested for shorts. http://i26.tinypic.com/m935vs.jpg Thought "here it goes, frying tonight!", however it works fine! Past the boot screen, the Sega game screen, loaded the first screen on Quake (whe...

Re: IntoDream - bacteria's DreamCast project
Indeed, no need for a 7808 as only using 7.4v. The DC also needs 3.3v (TI card), and 5v - used a thick double sided heatsink and 7805 - it gets rather warm (without a large heatsink the 7805 gets extremely hot), so will use another TI card when get around to it for the 5v instead. From what I read, ...

Re: My first portable finally finished!
Very good for a first system. As you say, you learn a lot from making portables; every time you make one your next is more awesome as you implement ideas not in before and also correct mistakes and techniques from the previous project.
