Re: Fixing non-opening tray of Benq 360 drive.

The slipping belt is why it can't pull the spindle away from the magnet without a disk in the drive. With a disk in, the spindle is held slightly farther away from the magnet where the magnetic flux is a bit weaker. They're designed to be able to fit close enough together to securely hold disks made...

A simple 4 or 8 way build it yourself joystick.

This is a 3D rendering and model (in DXF) of a joystick I built when I was a teenager. Somewhere around 25 years ago. I had four microswitches salvaged from old televisions, some scrap wood and a broken piece of plexiglass plus various screws and other bits and bobs. I first cut a piece of thin plyw...

Re: 360 Elite, Hdmi, and Sound.

The DVI and HDMI video signals are identical. HDMI includes digital audio but it's unlike any other format of digital audio. There are some rather expensive and over-featured 'black boxes' which are made for 'injecting' SPDIF, TOSLINK or analog audio into HDMI along with video from a DVI video conne...

Re: Fixing non-opening tray of Benq 360 drive.

I'm not taking the bleeping thing apart again unless something else in there needs fixing. One more thing I should have mentioned, at the front on the side where the eject button is, there's a bump stop for the tray. It's a small piece of soft, clear tubing on a rectangular peg. It's visible after r...

Fixing non-opening tray of Benq 360 drive.

First I got a new laser off eBay for $7.76. Fortunately in my research I found one site that showed there's three contacts on the laser bridged by a solder blob that must be removed after installing for the laser to work. I used a 15 watt grounded iron with three wire cord and plug. There are plenty...

Re: Affordable ANALOG arcade joystick?

Not that many arcade games use analog sticks or other analog controls. Tail Gunner used an analog stick but that's ancient and collectable. Star Wars used an analog 2-axis steering yoke. Space Harrier used an analog stick too. Perhaps one of the "49 way" sticks would work? Here's an interesting arti...

Re: 360 Drive Belts (Real belts, not rubberbands)

Try this. Put a small pan of water on your kitchen stove and heat it until it starts to boil. Turn the burner off and move the pan to a cool burner. Drop the belt into the hot water and leave it for 60 seconds. Fish it out with something other than your hand, let it cool then dry it off and reinstal...

Re: 360 gamertag thread

KVUGNG Just got setup on live tonight but still don't have a controller (I plugged in a keyboard) and am waiting on the new laser for the DVD drive. I was given a Xbox 360 for free, later model with built in HDMI and the heat pipe heatsink. It belonged to a very heavy smoker so it needed a bath. I t...

Capacitance d-pad control?

What would it take to make a surface mounted d-pad with no moving parts? I'm thinking of a center contact with four around it. Hold a thumb on the middle contact then rock and roll to contact one or two of the directional contacts. Space saving and no need to scavenge those parts from a controller, ...

Re: Offer: Casio TV-600B handheld color television.

It has a 3.5mm external antenna input. I've no idea of how it handles video and audio internally. That's what hacking is for, ;) Overall dimensions. 1.276" thick, 3.186" wide, 5.147" long, according to my Chinese 6" digital caliper. Might be roomy enough to cram a NOAC into. There's two angled tunin...

Re: Which consoles haven't been portablized?

Nobody has done a TI-99/4A laptop. There are very compact "micro PEB" boards being made that incorporate the most needed expansions plus use a CF card for massive "disk" storage capability. A 4A laptop would just need one of those and a speech synth board shoehorned in to be functionally complete. A...

Re: X360 Key Custom Case Mod PC Case Mod Xbox Slim

Very nice X-Box box mod. :) Should flip that radiator fan over so it pulls the warmed air out instead of pushing it down into the case like the original ATX power supply fans did. Whenever I'd get one of those early ATX PCs in my shop, the first thing I'd do after evicting the dust bunnies was flip ...

Bondo and epoxy and resin, oh my!

Bondo and similar auto body fillers are made of polyester resin and various fillers such as talcum powder and 'microbeads'. It's not very strong structurally and tends not to stick to really slick surfaces. It also doesn't stick to galvanized metal unless it's been roughened up with coarse sandpaper...

Here is Day 1 of the process of making a RTV silicone mold.

I'll be finishing this up over the next couple of days.

Edit: The mold is completed. Go to the link to see the rest of the steps.
