In my nes portable, everything is hooked up, it's just that when I power it all on, the screen works for a couple seconds before going a beige color and I can't see anything. Every LCD screen is different. They do use a huge amount of current though, enough to really hurt you. Removing the backlight isn't the same with every LCD. there will be some similarities, but still different. I desoldered the 4021 chip and rewired it, but it doesn't work. Does it need additional circuitry?

I had the same problem with mine. Try using thicker wires, or if you still have the power plug, solder it back onto the board and test it with the original power supply. If it works, relocate it with the wire that you're using for power. If it doesn't work after that, then you need thicker wires.
