Pictures of the NESp I'm working on... BIG PICTURE WARNING

Post by All4Sky »

Here are some sneak peeks at my NESp I've been working on. I just finished the custom case (original NES controller + hip gear screen housing). I'm wiring it up today and hope to have it finished by the weekend, unless something comes up. There is a slot to slide a NES cartridge into the top of the unit.

I'll be sure to post more pictures of it running, I've already done a dry-run with the built in games and it works fine so far. I still have to solder the 72 pin NES cartridge slot. I plan on having a switch to switch between the built in games and the NES cartridge. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks for looking!

Wow. That looks like a legit, factory-issue machine! How did you make the case? (Vacumn form, mold, enslave the Keebler elves and have them make it?)

Mind telling us how you made/ found the case? I'm pretty interested too.
If all else fails, take it apart!

That's AWESOME! Very professional looking! I assume it's vaccum formed? When do expect to finish it?

Thanks for the kind words! I really enjoyed making this one, and I can't wait to finish it. To answer a few questions:

I made the case using a project box as a frame. I then superglued/epoxied the hip gear and nes controller to that frame and filled in all the gaps with plastic body filler (bondo). Then I sanded, and filled MANY times. This takes a lot of time and patience, but if you know what you are doing the end result is worth it. I took a lot of pictures of the construction that I plan on posting on my own website (I don't want to load this thread up with pictures).

G-force: The only things I have left is to install are the switches (on/off, cartridge or built-in games), and the 72pin American NES cartridge slot (I REALLY don't look forward to doing this). After that, I just have to touch up the case a little bit and clean up some areas.

The sound works perfectly through the two original hip gear speakers, and I can still use the original volume, color, brightness, and contrast knobs.

Here are a few more pictures.

After painting the case, before mounting internal electronics:

Running a built in game as a dry run to test the controls, sound, etc:

The bottom of the portable, where I plan on installing swtiches, and maybe a headphone jack:

Last picture, a comparison to my other project (MegaJoyBoy):

There is barely enough room on the inside for the cartridge to slide in and out, hopefully I can get this done soon! Thanks again.

Thanks gannon, the slot I'm using is from a family converter I ordered from you.

Here are some pictures next to a NES cartridge, you can see that the portable is just a tad taller and wider:

How wide is it? 5.25"
I'm making mine just as wide as the cart (4.75" if I remember right)

Your portable looks amazing! I can't compliment you enough on how professional your casing looks... I like the size comparison with the Gameboy, looks very good! You also must have a pretty decent camera, because your shots have awesome color!

Can't wait to see the page you said you might be putting up!

I hate to put a post up here that just repeats what everyone else said but...

That is really amazing. Great job. It is very professional looking... and relatively inexpensive to make, I would assume: NOAC, Hip Gear screen, NES controller, project box, various pieces, parts, and construction material. My guess is under $75 (maybe close to $100 depending on shipping costs for each of those items). Not too shabby!!
