Yep a stock DS. I don't really play my DS anymore so it has been collecting dust. Decided that I would woodify it.

Image

Couple screws later I got the bottom off.

Image

Bottom of the DS casing. I am going to reuse the stylist holder. Would be impossible to construct out of wood.

Image

Some wires I had to disconnect. This is really a picture for me so I remember where they go

Image

Opening the top of the DS.

Image

Yep. Nothing much in the top half. Just a LCD, pair a speakers, a mic and a antenna.

Image

The friction hinge. Going to have to figure out how to make this work in wood. I am thinking of some epoxy to fix it in.

Image

All the case parts I am going to have to build out of wood.

Image

Yep, just making sure the DS still works. 8)

Image

The raw mahogany wood. This is 2'x3"x5/8" in size.

Image

Resaw the mahogany into 1/16" sheets.

Image

Profile of the side pieces for the top of the casing.

Image

Pre-sanding is done ready for glue.

Image

And...the boring picture of the wood drying....

I am going to be building this thing part by part. That is finish one part completely so I can eliminate the slight tolerances caused my the lacquer finish.

good to see you're not exposing it to static electricity ;)

This forum is so the proof that the dangers of static electricity are greatly exaggerated. Can't wait to see your progress.

Funny you would ask that.

Image

Rough filing of the logo. I am making it out of maple to accent the mahogany top.

Image

Vice and a fine file makes quick work of the extra material.

Image

This one is done.

Image

Comparing how the logo started out and how it finished.

Image

Next to the real thing. Pretty close. Its a little taller so I sanded it down a bit.

Image

I decided to use Super Glue to attach it. I didn't want to clean up the mess Wood Glue makes.

Image

Image

Spraying on the Lacquer.

Image

This won't be the final finish but is needed to keep the wood from warping.

If you call pull this off, it will rock.

How much larger will this be than the stock DS case?

wow, no f'in way! I never though i'd ever see a wooden DS, but your making one. I can't wait to see the way this comes out. Your work has inspired me to build a wooden cased portable some time in the future.

Yeah, the wooden cases of him (and c_mon) always look great. I too want to make a wooden case somewhen. But first I gotta make a case at all, it seems to be the part hindering me the most from actually finishing a portable. (No bacteria, I will not buy your case :P)
