neo-geo pocket color backlight mod

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

neo-geo pocket color backlight mod

Post by saragon » Sat Oct 08, 2005 7:58 pm

Hello all,

Not sure if this is in the right forum or not so I apologize in advance to the forum mods.

Anyways, my question is this.

I have a neo geo pocket color, and I would love to be able to light the screen. I'm guessing a backlight would be difficult, but what about side lighting?

Also, would there be a way to connect it to the current 2AA batteries the system uses?

Can I buy all the parts needed from my local radio shack?

Not sure exactly how to wire up an LED circuit. I do have basic soldering skills (soldering speaker wires).

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If it's a screen that's meant to be fronty lit, like the GBA screen, forget it. It won't work at all. But if it's made to have a backlight, go for it.

Open it and check if there is any HOLLOW space between the LCD and such. :)

If you HAVE enough space on the front, find a +5 volt surplus pin on your neo geo (might I reccomend using a *something*meter). The connect the positive prong to that pin, and neg to ground. Some wire would help. :) I'm not that good, so if anyone helps, or thinks this is wrong, come forward :D

I believe the NGPC, like most handhelds, uses two AAs (aka, 3v)

ya, it uses 2AAs. The screen isn't that big, so i'm not sure how many LEDs I would need. would 4 be overkill? also would it be possible to add a dimmer to the LED circuit so I can turn the LED's up or down depending on my lighting situation?
