Expansion pack soldering
Moderator:Moderators
Hi,
I am wondering how I can solder the expansion pack to the board. The contacts are so small! Is there any guides on this? Thanks,
Ian

Re: Expansion pack soldering
Using really thin wires helps, but the more thin the wire, the shorter it has to be to avoid interference on the lines. Like the cartridge slot, solder all contacts on one side of the board, then flip the board over and solder the other contacts. Other than that, just time and patience. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to how small and tight the soldering is, and the fact that you'd have to strain your eyes to see what you are doing...

Sorry . I'm real tired. LOLeagle5953 wrote:I'm pretty sure he's referring to how small and tight the soldering is, and the fact that you'd have to strain your eyes to see what you are doing...
Yea it's not a lot of fun. I have a lighted magnifying glass that really helps though. I need a new one that maybe can be adjusted (focused). Hmm more money to spend. Yea !!!

Re: Expansion pack soldering
hail did you use a knife in between your points while soldering?
i've done psp soldering that's harder than this but the sheer number of the wires that have to be perfect puts me off attempting this

Re: Expansion pack soldering
No I just tin every wire and every contact. Tack the wire to the contact on the top then bend the wire perfect with a pair of needle tip tweezers. Then tack it on the bottom contact while holding it with the tweezers. Move on to the next one. There is no solder on my solder tip , just use the solder from where the wire is tinned and the contacts are tinned.blaze3927 wrote:hail did you use a knife in between your points while soldering?

It takes a lot of time just to cut all the wires to the right size and then strip all ends and tin all wire ends.

Great! Thanks for the pic. I'll attempt this soon. Just to clarify, you put soldered to the board before putting on the wire, then put flux on the wires? By tack do you mean to solder it?

Re: Expansion pack soldering
put flux on the wire then put solder on the wire then put solder on the contact then solder each wire to each contact.

Re: Expansion pack soldering
Excellent Soldering there
Flux too
About time someone uses that stuff...
Can't you just solder the chip from pin-to-pin? IE: No wires?
(I have not yet looked at the traces, but can it be done that way at all?)
*EDIT*
