What would be an easy portable to be made by a 10 year old?

It depends on your skill with electronics, soldering, etc. The NES isn't bad. I also have a bunch of NES boards.

Atari 2600 is pretty straightforward. The NES is good too, and don't over look the Genesis. Like above it depends on your skill level and of course if you can get the materials.

As for what system to do for a first project, go with an NOAC portable. Superjoys and Yobos are cheap and easy to find, and an NES will look good on a cheaper screen. I would really suggest an OAC because they're smaller, and they're usually easier to work with. They also usually suck less power, which means you can save a lot on batteries.

With cases, most anything will do. You can either get a project case and cut holes in it, or just modify an existing case. Both of those work great. Triton's guide here is helpful http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=11807


And here's my opinion of you, made small so it's relatively unobtrusive. Regardless of your electronics experience, you aren't going to get anywhere without interacting well with the people on this forum. Just...
1) Use spell check. It takes less then a minute, and it really helps interaction between you and the other people here.
2) Post things in the correct section. While you may think that isn't a big deal, it's really important for the organization of the forum.
3) Don't attempt to sound cool, just be yourself. Trying to sound cool just makes you sound like an idiot (I learned that lesson over the period of 3 years).

If you do these three things, we'll probably end up forgetting you're a 10 year old.

Pff, don't listen to them. If you have soldering experience, some electronics knowledge, and the means to build a case, then you're good.
If you have any questions then FIRST check the stickies (the topics at the tops of the pages with the little icon).
Also make sure you check the reference section. It's still a little incomplete, but it's an excellent source for information.
If you can't find what you're looking for in either of those, use the search. (search.php)
If you still can't find the answer to your question, try Google.
THEN you may post a question thread.

Just note that we don't have any basic electronics tutorials yet (what is ground, etc) but you might be able to find that with the search.

Age is not an issue when it comes to this kind of thing, it's knowledge.
You said you have some soldering experience? That's good, because you will be doing a LOT of it. Do you have much experience with electronics?

It uses the original hardware, not an NOAC, but it's easier to solder to.

I don't understand what you mean when you say ":Custom Atari 5200 styled power supply/AV hook ups." Could you explain? And why wouldn't you put a built in controller on this? If you don't build the controller into the portable, you would need to carry around and plug in a controller every time you wanted to play.
