Question about tact switches

Post by Simba » Thu May 14, 2009 8:57 pm

I'm about to take my first step into the world of console modding. I'm going to attempt the PSOne hand made portable. I've got the console and screen, but I haven't picked up any parts yet.

Which tact switches do you guys recommend? Digi-keys is not currently stocking the 4.5mm. Are there alternatives?

I had looked at the thread, but I'm pretty new to this so please bear with me. If I go with squishy tacts, do I want to buy the same size switches (6mm and 4.5mm) that recommended in the book, or is it okay to buy different sizes? I'm going to try to follow the book to the letter to avoid as many problems as I can.

 any size will work as long as it's not huge or ridiculously small

You can get them from eBay.

I think Mouser and Digi-Key have them too.

Thanks guys, I'll probably get them from digi-keys and get some white LEDs while I'm at it.

I've just spent the past couple hours getting all the supplies I'll need, and there were a couple of things that I couldn't find. First, where is a good place to get etching plastic? The local trophy store was no good.

Second, Ace hardware did not have the recommended compression spring (size is 5/32" x 9/16"). Any other ideas on where to pick one up?

One more thing, the book says that I'll need a 3/32" x 2 1/4" steel rod. What is for (I haven't started on the project yet), and where can I find one?

If you can't find engraving plastic I recommend you try searching online for some 1/16" styrene plastic. It's cheap and easy to drill and cut.

Well, considering this is my first time building something like this, I figured I'd take the safe route the first time, and then start to experiment. I'll save myself a lot of unnecessary expenses and headaches this way (hopefully).

DO NOT BUY YOUR LEDS FROM DIGIKEY! I payed like $3 per LED on that site, then I bought a lot of 50 LEDs off of ebay for $7.99. (If you wish, I might still have the link in my ebay.)

Personally I think starting off with one of the book's designs is a great idea, but if you stick with this hobby you'll quickly learn that sometimes it's easier/more fun to go with your own design.
