You can replace the disc drive with a hard drive, and then put the backups on that.
That's the only way I've seen people get around it.

Can you find out from him how he got around the issue I'm having?

My guess is that he flashed the TSOP, but I'd like to know if there's another way around it.

I think he did on that one. I'll ask him if he know anything about the problem you're having (and a way around it) tomorrow.

Thanks.

I already looked up how to flash TSOP - I need to solder two sets of points together. But if it's just a matter of connecting some of the IDE wires, I'd rather do that.

Thanks! I guess I'll be figuring out this soldering business and flashing my BIOS then...

Flashing the TSOP isn't hard. I just did it to one of my xboxes less than an hour ago. Now it can run without the DVD drive plugged in. I used "eurasia" and xecuter2 4981.67 bios. I just pieced together info from different guides to figure it out. Just hope your xbox isn't a 1.6, then you're screwed and need a modchip.

There really is no reason not to flash your TSOP. It's fun as hell and allows you to stop worring about softmods forever. I use my Xbox everyday for XBMC and some older games (heh, Street Fighter III), so I'll be watching your project. :)

In regards to using SATA HDD in an xbox, from what I have read there have been all kinds of problems, even if running it through a converter. From PC IDE to laptop IDE seems to go a lot smoother since they use the same IDE channels and just add the 4 pins for power. You may also want to consider replacing the power connector with one of these:

http://www.mini-box.com/picoPSU-150-XT- ... 8Ta38NbNz0

I'm not 100% certain on how much power a HDD and the xbox itself draws, but if one or even two of these could be used to provide power, that means you can hack off the entire power supply segment of the xbox, or possibly use it to shuffle everything over and give yourself some more space. I suppose you could try a IDE to USB converter and run the XBOX off of a rear plug in thumb drive - something in the range of 32 Gigs, and then keep the DVD drive only having it moved over to the Right hand side instead of the left, with the power and USB thumbdrive coming in at the rear of the left hand side (same as where the AV kit plugs in).

Just a few thoughts I figured I would throw out there.

Cool project, Eagle. I'm sure if you bring it to MGC and set it up with a TV, it would go over quite well.

I don't even own an XBox and now I want to go get one a put some games on a replacement hard drive...

Thanks! Yeah, I think MGC would be a good place to show it off.
And knowing how fast I work, it might be done by then.

I've been busy, so I haven't touched it in a while. Still need to bridge the contacts to make the chip flashable, then I need to actually flash it.

Have you formatted the Laptop HDD yet? If you haven't I'd highly recommend using the Slayer's HDD Formatting disc, you can grab it from xBins and it works wonders on getting your partitions correct, I used it on my 320GB drive and have never had any issues with sectors corrupting or anything.
The C:, E:, X:, Y:, and Z: partitions get the first 8 GB, I think. Beyond that, it creates an F: partition. If the F: partition would be over 137 GB, it creates a G: partition for the remainder (presumably up to an additional 137 GB). It'd probably just keep adding 137 GB partitions as needed.
I want to say that on my xBox my F: partition is around 200GB and I do not have a G: partition, I believe you can make it as big as you want if you chip your system.

Yes, the hard drive is all set. The only things remaining to do are bridging the 2 sets of points, flashing the TSOP, and trimming down the case. I haven't done anything with this in a while, but I'm not putting it off or anything. I've just been busy with other things.

I recommend the X2 5035 firmware. It only needs to be flashed once and can be configured by modifying a settings file on your hard drive.

If you don't want to deal with softmods prior to flashing, you can also get a used copy of MechAssault and a hacked save file to quickly boot into EvoX and flash your TSOP. :)
