Krylon Coming off of ABS
Moderator:Moderators
In my N64 portable, the back panel is made from an old NES top, which is ABS. I used Krylon Fusion paint, which is made for plastics. Unfortunately, it's chipping and coming off where my fingers touch the back. It's getting pretty bad, so does anybody know why this happens and how to prevent it?

Is it glossy? If it is, I'd have to paint my entire (completed) portable.

Did you sand/primer before the coat(s) of Krylon?

Krylon says that you don't need to do either of those before painting with their paint.Of course I suppose that depends on what material you use.

Never use primer with Fusion. You may need to sand before painting, though. How did you prepare the plastic when you first painted it?
There are clear coats available with a satin or matte finish. That would give it extra protection.

Never knew that one, but I've never used Fusion particularly either.Tibia wrote:Never use primer with Fusion.

Neither, just wiped it down with a wet towel. Then dried it, of course. But I didn't know you should sand it.Skyone wrote:Did you sand/primer before the coat(s) of Krylon?

You don't HAVE to, but you will pretty much always get better results.Mario wrote:Neither, just wiped it down with a wet towel. Then dried it, of course. But I didn't know you should sand it.Skyone wrote:Did you sand/primer before the coat(s) of Krylon?

Fusion is soo many goods. I don't think I'll use anything else.
It could be the age of the plastic combined with no sanding. They say you don't need to sand, but it only helps. And I don't know what your painting technique is, but it's possible that the coats were too thick or whatever.

Instead of a damp towel to clean the plastic, use some alcohol wipes. It evaporates and dries quickly, and unlike water, it can take care of the oils from your skin. They can affect how the paint bonds.
Can you take it apart so that you just repaint the back? I'd do that myself. I'd sand it down a bit, then clean it with the alcohol wipes before you repaint.
