I built this yesterday at robotics club (yeah, I'm a nerd). Here's a 3/4 view "ugliness shot"
Image
It's based around an LM317. Unfortunately it's really hard to adjust because of the pots I used. I built it on the non-copper side of a blank circuit board. The LM317 wraps around and is soldered onto the back (copper). It's got a bridge rectifier and a crapload of capacitors so it can be connected directly to a transformer.

Sneak peek: 3.3V regulator!
Image
This is also based on an LM317, but it's fixed at 3.3V. I've got to test it. If it works, it'll be used to power an N64. It'll get pretty hot, so I'm going to add a heatsink. I have one somewhere.

I lol'd at that.

This project probably has the most new parts of any of my projects so far. Actually, the 3.3Vreg wins that, because it is ALL NEW except for the wires.

It wouldn't be FIRST(http://www.usfirst.org robotics would it? I am currently a member of such a team, and will be going to the regional compo on Friday. If anyone is attending the 2009 NASA VCU Regional Richmond, VA DATE 3/19/2009 - 3/21/2009 It would be fun to meetup.

function over form nice.

No, it's not FIRST, we don't have that in Canada I don't think. And we actually do a few things- there's the Skills Canada teams (3 I think) who are seniors, senior and junior VEX teams (over for this season), and junior sumo-bots. I was in the junior VEX at the beginning but quit because we argued and couldn't get anything done. We lost a competition badly. After that it kinda dissolved and a new team of people took our place. They worked well together. So pretty much I just use all the tools and supplies to build my own project. And the sumobot. Which is actually convertible to battlebot. So I might call it Jekyll-bot/Hyde-bot. But pretty much I just build my own junk.

I don't really know. I only found out about skills canada this year lol.

Well there's VEX, but that requires a team, mainly for schools, requires expensive kit. Skills canada is for schools. There's not a lot of events for independant teams.

There's a combat event in Saskatchewan, warbots or something like that. And there's an antwars in ontario somewhere.

Anyway, it's not THAT ugly. Good job.

Cool what is your team number? I am a member of team 1095 robocavs.

I'm prety sure there are FIRST teams in Canada.

we have two build seasons one for FRC (First robotics compo.) and FTC (FIRST tech challenge). In FTC we use the VEX kits for building.

what resistor values did you use for 3.3v? I know r1 os 240Ω but what is r2?

Actually I used 220ohm for R1. For R2 the ideal is about 365ohm, I was going to use 370ohm, but didn't have any so I used a 330ohm and a 33ohm, or something like that.
