completed XBox paint mod: UW-Green Bay

Post by eagle5953 » Tue Mar 10, 2009 10:06 pm

This being my 200th post, I decided I needed to show something that I've done. Thus, I present the XBox I modded up for my youngest brother earlier this year for his birthday present. His college is the theme; their colors are green and white, and their logo is a stylized phoenix:

Well, here it is!

There's a 40 GB hard drive under the hood... and it's softmodded.

I used the ever-popular Krylon Fusion. Stuff works really well. I put clear coat over the top for that nice shine. I wish the edges between colors were cleaner and better defined, but I hadn't ever tried something like this. My initial technique was terrible, but by the end, I was starting to get the hang of it. For example, notice how the drive door looks a shade yellower than the rest? Not a optical illusion: I initially laid the clear coat too thick and ended up re-painting the entire thing. Nonetheless, it was a learning experience.

Now I just need to finish my current XBox project...

I've decided that as a packers fan, this is what you really made:

Um, that's pretty garish.

If I had tried for a Packers design, I would separate the green and yellow with white, like they do on the uniforms. Not a bad idea, but with the initial matte black of the XBox, it seems a Steelers or Bengals paint job would be pretty spiffy.

meh, it was only a rough mock-up meant to be a joke. I'm not the most artistically talented individual.

you can tell I got lazy with it by the abhorrent gimp-job on the symbol.

edit: and I almost forgot to compliment you on your fine paint-job. it looks really well-done.

I knew that - I just meant that the Packers colors, for whatever reason, never look very good on video game stuff. Have you seen the XBox 360 Packer themed controllers? Eww.

Thanks to everyone for the comments!

Funny thing: I wanted to save time so I decided to listen to the Hymn To Red October and browse the forums at the same time. So basically I was listening to the Red October theme song, which was actually a pretty good unveiling song.

Which gives me an idea.

How did you put the logo on? Was it a stencil?

For the jewel on top, I removed it and sanded it until it was transparent. I then printed the phoenix logo onto a sticky label, cut it out very carefully, stuck it to the back, painted the back of the jewel white, removed the label, and painted the back green. A little five-minute epoxy (great stuff!) holds it on.

The jewel on the controller was more interesting. First, I shattered it when I was trying to remove it (Let's see you do it! It's glued on really well, plus it is set into the controller, so you can't pry it off either). I then had to make a new one, which I did by slicing a shallow dome off a clear plastic ball and sanding it perfectly round. I then simply printed the logo on some decently-thick paper and glued the whole thing onto the controller (again, using five-minute epoxy).

I personally like the painting method better because scratches don't show, but because the controller jewel is not flat on the bottom, that would have been considerably more difficult.

I'm more than OK with that - We've started a new Benheck meme! Keep it going!

In Soviet Russia, XBox plays you!

In Soviet Russia, you appear large to controller!

In Soviet Russia, you lose $4 Billion in 4 years!

OK, I'm done now.
