I am planing on buying the "Hacking Videogame Consoles" book, and I'm just wondering how challenging the hacks in the book are. How hard is it? I don't know a lot about inside of a machine or stuff like that, but I know how to solder.

once you get the hang of soldering it is pretty easy and fun

The book explains pretty much all you need for a portable. Also, Ben's book is easily read and followed. With the book, the hacks aren't so hard since it gives complete step-by-step giudes to the electronics side of the portables it it.

Some of the hacks are more complicated, like making mini boards for controllers; as opposed to hacking up two controllers and rewiring a bit.

What systems do you want to make?

After that, you buy the book and follow the step-by-step instructions with helpful pictures. :D

Haha ok, but do I need that for the mod. And will it tell me to get that and all the other materials I will need. Also, what do you think the hardest console is to hack and what is the easiest.

In the book? Well, I would say Atari, because the NES one tells you to use a fullsized NES... But with a NOAC, it will be a lot easier.

The hardest in the book is the CNC Psone.

The hardest cartridge based one NOT in the book is N64. (Ok, intellivision is worse... :P )

Hardest disc-based is probably PS3 or Wii, but don't worry about those.

Start with the NES, if you already have a real one, use that, but if not, get a NOAC.

:D
