Putting a wet paper towel on a half-exposed LCD screen - might not be a good idea...(Removing the second half!)

So can you do this to laptop screens? And what are the chances of screwing up if you follow all the directions and something just doesn't work?

Because you want to remove the antiglare in one piece easily in one motion. If you remove part of it and then leave it sitting it will re-adhere to the polarizer. Also if you have to resoak or if you try remove the polarizer to soon it will make stress lines and marks as it comes up that can't be removed.

That's why I stressed a 4 hour soak and pulling it off in one piece.

Exactly , the polarizer will start trying to come up and it will leave hazy marks on the screen. See the way this works is the water permeates the antiglare layer allowing the glue underneath to release from the polarizer. But it will work that way with the polarizer also. So that's why you want one 4 hour soak and a clean removal.

Yes I've done it to several laptop screens but they are more problematic. Some of them have a hard antiglare called 3H Antiglare. And if you happen to get one of these it is a nightmare to remove. It usually takes a 24 hour soak and then it might start permeating the polarizer and leave "grain" lines which is bad.

Also laptop and computer lcd screens have very fragile ffc's that can be damaged very easily. The ffc is the flat flexible cable that connects the screen to the controller board. Bending these and getting them wet can cause them to break and/or come loose rendering the screen ruined. So it is a much riskier proposition than the Psone screen . The Psone has very resilient ffc's

I will probably do this. Looking at the screen I can imagine what it'd be like. Would a longer soak be bad? If I do this in the future I will put the towels on before school and take them off after. Or would they dry by then?

What are the chances of messing this up, because I'm done all the electronics and getting a new screen now would suck.

Sorry I posted first and then noticed the other posts on the second page. And then i forgot to just edit.

You only want to soak for 4 hours. You could probably get away with a longer soak but to long and it might start penetrating the polarizer which you DON'T want. You can always cover the paper towels with saran wrap to keep them wet.

It's pretty hard to mess up unless you rush things. Also I am going to amend the tutorial. It would be easier to just take out the Lcd and place it on a towel before applying the paper towels. That way no water gets into the backlight and you don't have to wait for it to dry.

Might as well buy a new Psone screen.

A new polarizer is going to cost about as much as a new screen. You have to buy it in a pretty large sheet and cut it to fit. Then you have to hope you can get it to adhere to the lcd without bubbles which is nearly impossible.

On a side note this is about the easiest Lcd to get the polarizer off IF you follow the instructions precisely. ESPECIALLY the part about water soaking for 4 hours.

Ok Hail, look at this. The Polarizer/Antiglare combo are both cut to a little less than the glass is, right? You can see there is a 1mm or so space between the edge of the glass and the edge of the mystery item.

The antiglare is about halfway up on the mystery item, right? Is it insanely thin or somewhat thick?








I have some unwanted scratches on my screen. They seem to be a result of a circuit board.

Yes the Polar/Antiglare looks like one piece. It is smaller than the glass by about 1mm on all sides.

The antiglare is really thin on the top of the polarizer. And it is not very noticeable as a separate layer until you water soak it and slide a razor between the antiglare and the polarizer. And the antiglare is about 3/4 of the way up the mystery layer.

It's soaking now. I hope to God I don't screw it up. If I see it's starting to mess something up can I put it back on or? What then? Also, you've done several. Is there an optimal direction to pull? As parallel as possible, perhaps?

Remember to saok for 4 hours. I add water every hour or so to keep it wet.

When pulling it off after you get a corner started, peel back towards the opposite corner with the antiglare bent back over itself a little.

If you start to pull up the polarizer just lay it back down and when the water drys it will re-adhere itself.

Remember the antiglare is thin and bends really easily and is just cloudy. the polarizer is thick and doesn't bend easily and is dark tinted.
