Specs include a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 5-inch touchscreen OLED display with 960 x 544 resolution, dual analog sticks (not nubs as on the current generation), 3G, WiFi, GPS, a rear-mounted touchpad, the same accelerometer / gyroscope motion sensing as in the PlayStation Move, an electronic compass, and cameras on both the front and back. Available this holiday season. Wait... what?!

I'm going to predict $299

It looks pretty promising, but I wouldn't get your hopes up for a stateside release this year. I'm pretty sure the holiday release date is for Japan only (and they haven't announced region-coding information yet, that I've read). I agree with you on the price point though, marshallh. I think Sony has learned their lesson on pricing systems after the PS3, plus they'll want to be comparably priced to the 3DS.

$300 seems a little low, phones that cost twice as much don't even have half the features. But its almost a year away from being released, so prices should drop a bit.

I'm guessing five-hundred and ninety-nine US dollars, anything lower would be asinine by Sony's standards.

yeah, one thing both the 3ds and this have in common. Freaking smart phones will already be playing there games. makes me want to go to town on a decent portable PC build... Just have to get my ass in school right now. Oh once I'm accepted there's going to have to be a build, I feel like I'm no longer repersenting my self in that respect. Thanks sony, and thanks nintendo. Your both dragging your feet, The play station will be fine, the New DS will be too. Though nintendo has this gnact for early novelties that don't last ten minutes. The PSP looks like it's just catching up to nintendos novelty and smart phones, specs are better...

Sort of feels like the last console thing. oh well, I remember the DS had weak content and my psp kept on going till I spilled thai food on it. All in all the PSP won me over, and it was not what I expected, but I remember being first inline to get the DS, then a wile latter I was weighing it out, to get a PSP or a Wii. No one had the wii yet, it was the release season. But when it came down to it I played a wii for a few minutes and thought it was really stupid. Don't get me wrong controls where new and 'Great'... But you could watch porn and play decent games with the PSP, I gave it a joystick put emulators on it with out looking stupid like all the crap hanging out of my DS. Plus the games that continued to come out didn't suck. there was no half ass stunt to win me over just the choice of games. I wanted a good racing Game the PSP had tons, The wii did a watered down driver parallel lines port and had that NFS game with to much menus... the one they made after firing the underground guys, such a bad idea to fire them (last time it happened they broke off and sold them back the tittle game independently.)

So realisticly I'll go cragslist for busted net books, install (not port) multi-Theft auto and just keep cranking out what I feel I want to see... and I've yet to make a good case...

Also Your portables have been getting around. Congrats Benheckers... I guess the next thing is to compete with the big guys and build a one off unit or two that can be repeated. knowing this place and the ease of sharing ideas, that's coming soon.

^^cool story

i reckon they'll go 279. with 330 for like extra memory.
they need to be price competitive, i doubt they'll not learn after wii dominance.

do you think the 3ds will flop with the whole 3d thing though,3d is a gimic with limited novelty before annoyance it seems

Well I dunno, I personally think the biggest annoyance of any current 3D system has to be the glasses. The 3DS doesnt need glasses, so I think that if the games are well-executed, the 3DS will be a success.

actually that Sony rep on Marshals link said the same thing when they asked him what he thought about the DS. I'm guessing they noticed the difference too.

I suppose I just don't want ether of them to sell me a novelty and me to be sick of it by the end of the week... REPLAY VALUE. I guess the big representation of there line up will really come out in march before and then during E3 again.

PSP 1000 homebrew gave it a zillion extra replay value, a wonder if sony will be unclever and do something like zune's xna game/app development. which will hopefully lead to an exploit later

With all the recent PS3 stuff I feel like they're going to try extra hard to let nothing slip by them. Or, hopefully, they are going to make homebrew possible in some manner without hacking to avoid all the pain and grief they've had with the PSP and PS3.

This is just it. A lot of people bought PSPs just for emulation and homebrew purposes. The fact that to do so also opened wide the door to piracy as well hit them hard. If the two motivations were not united in cracking the PSP open, Sony wouldn't have had such a piracy problem.

There is no way Sony would loosen up over the homebrew scene. The reason the PSP was a commercial failure for Sony was due to piracy. They would make a small profit on the console, and then fail with UMD sales. The fact that hardly anyone who owned the system actually paid for games ruined third party support and, forgive me, but the PSP really didn't have that many great games. The thing keeping me edgy on a PSP2 purchase is the failure of the PSP. If Sony doesn't devote themselves to repairing their support, we may have the whole "WTF? why is no one making games?" scenario again. Nintendo may be seen as 'kiddy" and lame to some, but for their hardcore gamers, they have finally listened, the evidence being this past years Wii and DS line ups. Nintendo is certainly marketing the 3ds towards the gamers they have lost over the years, and more of the new (dare I say ignorant) "fps console generation." Both systems look promising, but I trust Nintendo far more than Sony at this point to follow through. One more thing, Nintendo is not a gimmick company. Rumble is not a gimmick. Analog sticks are not a gimmick. Camera buttons are not a gimmick. D-pads are not a gimmick. Shoulder buttons are not a gimmick. You might call motion control a gimmick, but look who is now deciding to pick it up (COUGH*SONYMICROSOFT*HYPOCRITES). People seem to forget that Nintendo is a very large reason that gaming is where it is now. While I do not care much for 3d, I think it will be interesting to see how 3d can add to the experience of gaming. I will however, place my faith in Nintendo's gambles.

Flawed logic. I know more people with flash cards on their DS than hacked PSP's. It's far easier to hack the DS. And yet it sells like crazy, games to.

That though IS the reason it is not a raging sucess. :)
