Random capitalization of words

Post by nitro2k01 » Mon Mar 09, 2009 7:59 pm

Lately I've seen people capitalize words randomly, without reason. If people do it in headlines, that's one thing. If people do it for proper names etc, it's another thing. If people do it for words like "Church" and "School" it's incorrect, even if I kind of get where they're going with it. Then there's the completely random capitalization. For example this:
Hackmodford wrote:The thing is I took the bad Drive out and it still thinks it in there won't let me uninstall the hardware.
(here)
I've also seen Rekarp do this a lot. Note that I'm not bashing Hackmodford or even Rekarp for this (I just took these people as examples)
I see a trend in this, and I'm wondering what makes people capitalize words randomly without grammatical justification.

Thats At Least Better Than When People Capitalize Every Word In A Sentence, Or EvEn WorSe WhEn ThEy AlTeRnAtE CaPs

Internet grammar shouldn't even really be a big issue as long as the offender is at least trying not to be a complete idiot.

I sometimes capitalize nouns. I took German for a couple years and they capitalize all nouns so the habit has kinda stuck with me in some sense.

It carries over from CAD and drafting work I am afraid. My father does this to. So I guess it may be an engineering thing. Capitalizing important words or objects in sentences always made sense to me..unlike my HS English class...../grumble

It reminds me of the flavor text of old football cards. They'd say something like:
"In 1987, he led the team with 112 Tackles and 13 Sacks." Seemingly every football word was capitalized for no apparent reason.

But that's just me.

I do that a lot, but only to nouns.

Like DVD Drive, Power Supply, etc...

I think it looks better when they are capital.
