First the VHS bit the dust. Now THIS too!?

Good bye old faithful disk based movie format....
Yes, we're just as shocked and horrified to hear the news as you are, but it seems to be true. Pioneer, the last major electronics manufacturer to continue production of laserdisc players, has announced they'll discontinue all three of the models they currently offer, leaving dozens of hardcore fans in the dust
Even more details here

Anyways, First the VHS. Now the Laserdisk. Thats two of the last remaining great video formats to bite the dust within two months.

The only other of the last great video formats I can think of now thats left is the CD. And even with Digital music download. It seems to not be slowing down it's sales much at all. And even if they stop putting music on CD. The CD still has a market for being used in computer applications.

But still, at this rate you have to wonder.......

To be honest, as far as video quality goes, I don' think the laserdisc was all that great.

But... how cool were those oversized CDs?

That's gonna suck when the only way to watch stuff is with digital crap. Screw digital, I like analog stuff.

Oh waaah. LaserDisc has been irrelevant since before Clinton was elected.

DVD's technically superior. What's next, are your going to mourn LPs because they have better sound quality than a CD?

LDs were never very hot in the states, but they were pretty popular in japan tho. I think they even made HD LDs too...

As far as DVD vs LD goes, when it comes to picture, I always thought LD was the better format. Although they both shared the same resolution level, because of their analouge nature LDs don't have any of the compression artifacts you see in a DVD.

Of course, when it comes to storage and care needs, DVD ftw.

Well, LP's are making a comeback, but compared to a CD they are extremely useless. They can get worn out and or get dust on them and they pop and crackle. They're neat, but come on.

Also, I don't need to have movies in album sized discs that will take up space. Calm down, it's like saying that your dead dog died then you finally buried it, 10+ years later.

That's actually techincally correct, but if you really wanted to get picky, players and discs with the actual "LaserDisc" name only appeared in 1991.

I'm honestly surprised; I thought they canned LaserDisc officially back in 2001-2002, but they were still making players up until now? Wow.

I've always wanted to collect LaserDiscs, personally. I got a player that used to be part of a museum exhibit and found some discs at the local Saver's ("Terminator 2: Judgement Day" special edition and "Apollo 13," 99 cents each!), but my game collecting has consumed me more.

Also, I really like LPs because I think they're great for the warm, authentic sound they produce. CD's and other digital formats are great for portability, though.

Meh... the last of the analog format that couldn't hold a candle to DVD and Blu-Ray? honestly, move on.

I love Vinyl Records though, CD's are easier and I buy most on Digital Download/CD, but Vinyls are just awesome.
