Post by mooplehead » Tue Mar 13, 2012 6:40 pm

Hey evreryone,
most of you know what hyperspin is,
i was thinking of making like a portable pc with hyperspin frontend
it will run all the emulators .
i will need motherboard, ram, graph card, power supply, etc
it will be bulky im guessing but thats ok
one logitech controller
one screen
one product case
more updates later
tell us what you think

currently im in the research and finance stages of this project
the graphic card will need to be able to handle ps2, gamecube and x-box emulator games.
the motherboard needs to be releativly small obviously
the logitech controller is perfect becasue it is compatible with all the emulators, but im not sure how to spread it across the product case so it can be handheld.
for the screen i was thinking of dismantiling it from an old portable dvd player.
it will also need a battery power supply.
i am aiming for at least 40 emulators
i beleive the harddrives will be the bulk of the system,
i want to go for 2 two terebyte drives.
again i dont mind if there is a lot of backing to the project.
please give some feedback.

Ever hear of the Rasberry Pi? Or grammar?
It's a tiny computer that has emulators being developed for it.

Hmmm. Doesn't seem that possible, especially for a PORTABLE system. What you want, and what batteries are going to be able to power are polar opposites.

A graphics card to run PS2, Gamecube and Xbox-
-PS2? Maybe, same with Gamecube. Xbox? No way Jose. I don't think there's even an emulator out for it. Plus, a graphics card capable of handling PS2 is not going to be small and easy on power, unless you manage to find a really small motherboard with an MxM slot. If you do, then you could run a GTX 280 or something.

2x2TB HDDs-
-I'm assuming 3.5". Those will not only drain the battery even more, they will be heavy, bulky and fragile.

Plus the whole deal with not capitalizing the I's. I hate to sound picky, but I like to think every time I send out a message of some sort and I don't capitalize an I where necessary, something bad happens to a dolphin.

Thanks for the feed back griehm :)
oh so recently ive decided to not include ps2, xbox,
I may still include gamecube.
recently i have been looking at motherboards at this site
http://www.directron.com/miniitxmb.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
there small so obvious choice.
And like i said i dont care about how bulky it is, its my first project.
i havent thought about batteries yet, but maybe you could me please.

Yeah, don't do this as your first project.
It's basically like asking a baby to play Colossal Cave Adventure.

I'm doing something like this, and I really shouldn't. I'm using a nano ITX board, 5"^2, and it uses an embedded processor. a Mini ITX board will either un a desktop processor, which is still too powerful for batteries, and if you get an embedded one, make sure it has a powerful enough chipset to run Gamecube. GMA 950 is not going to cut it. I have run a gamecube emulator on HD3000, but with some issues regarding lag.

Don't do this to yourself. You'll end up spending a lot of money and time. I've blown a little over 400, and so far I don't even have a WIP thread for it because of my lack of parts. If you are going to trysomething for a project, start with a simple system to get a feel for how much power modern devices really draw because, quite frankly, your view of power draw might be a bit off.

Mmm i think you may be right.
As much as i would love to see a hyperspin portable it is most defenitly out of my reach right now.
I was thinking of maybe switching to the old n64 or something like that.
Thanks from saving me from making a mistake.

An N64 is within reach, and there are loads of games that are tons of fun to play on it. I haven't done one but I really should.
