Making a GCp

Post by Prandy » Sat Dec 10, 2011 5:21 pm

Hey there guys, before I start I'd like to thank everyone who has contributed to this site, it has made my research so much easier :)

As the title says I want to make a GCp, it will be my first portable but not my first hack in general. I know a lot of people advise against doing a GC as their first portable but I reckon my history helps.

I think I have everything sorted to start on this project but I'd like to run some of the details by you to see if I have made a silly mistake.

First off is the screen, I've gone with a Joytech portable GC screen that I bought in a bundle with the console itself:
http://flashbackgames.co.uk/shop/Item.a ... uctID=1966" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'm assuming it will be simple enough to wire up as most of it is just done already. It takes power from the 12v DC and the signal straight from the AV out. All that remains to be done is to bypass a couple of jacks and sockets.

Battery wise (where I am most unsure) I was going to go for 4x 3.7v 3000mAh Li-Po cells:
http://www.batteryspace.com/highpowerpo ... arate.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'm planning on using these in series and parallel for a 7.4v 6000mAh battery to run the show. However this gives something like 22.2Wh which would only be about an hour or so of play time? (could some one confirm this please?)
For the PCB and charger I was just going to use the ones advised elsewhere in the forums and go for:
http://www.batteryspace.com/pcbfor74vli ... limit.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.batteryspace.com/smartcharge ... isted.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The plan is to make my own regulator board as in the zenloc thread, and run it off of 7.4v after ShockSlayer's 5v discovery. I'd also try and stick in a low battery circuit and use the switch setup SS posted to charge and play off mains power.

I also fancy using the rumble motors too, however it isn't the end of the world if I don't manage it. Will it drain too much power too quickly? Because that's what I'm thinking :P

Other than that I'm planning on using Kasar's guide along side other revisions to get the wiring done. I've not settled on a case but a GBA style thing with the screen in the middle and buttons on the edge would probably be my first choice by frankencasing a kids toy.
It's late here so I may have left some vital detail out but my question is will this work? I'm willing to put time, money and effort into this so would like to get off on a good start and where else is better to get a veteren opinion?

Thanks guys, Prandy
